Ted Cruz Drops Out Of Presidential Race

On Tuesday, shortly after Donald Trump won the Indiana primary in a landslide, The New York Times reported that Ted Cruz would be dropping out of the race. Taking the stage in Indiana to make the announcement that news outlets had reported on just seconds prior, Ted Cruz said, "Americans are deeply frustrated, and desperately want to change the path that we're on." Political observers had long noted that Indiana was Cruz's last shot at the presidency. It seems that Cruz and his team agreed. Update: Ted Cruz has officially dropped out of the Republican race.

Cruz's abrupt withdrawal from the race leaves just John Kasich and Donald Trump in the Republican field. Kasich cannot gain enough delegates to gain the nomination without a contested convention.

In effect, Cruz dropping out was the nail in the coffin that was the GOP's worst nightmare: The Republican nominee for president being Donald Trump.

"I love each and every one of you," Cruz said towards the end of the speech. "I've said that I would continue on as long as there was a viable path to victory. Tonight, I'm sorry to say it appears that path has been foreclosed."

"We gave it everything we got," he added, "but the voters chose another path. And so, with a heavy heart, but with boundless optimism ... We are suspending our campaign."

Wolf Blitzer, speaking on CNN after the announcement, said, "Donald Trump emerges as the presumptive nominee of the Republican Party. Interestingly enough."
