What to give the mother who has everything this May 8? One of these seven heartwarming Mother's Day poems isn't a bad start. While you can get your mother physical gift after physical gift, there's something about a poem that seems to outdo everything tangible and stick with the receiver forever. (Not to mention, it's a great alternative for those who are on a tight budget this May!)

Now, since most of us aren't natural born poets, you may be wondering where exactly you should begin. I'm not saying you have to write up an original Mother's Day sonnet that compares with that of Shakespeare. In fact, I think you should even feel comfortable using a poem that has already been written (so long as you give credit where credit is due).

Forget the "roses are red, violets are blue" poems and instead embrace one of these seven Mother's Day poems that really gets to the heart of the matter. You love your mom, and you want her to know that... so tell it to her through someone else's rhyming (or not rhyming) words instead of solely through some gift certificate. Pick out a pretty card, your best pen, and get to writing.

1. "Wonderful Mother" by Pat O'Reilly

God made a wonderful mother,A mother who never grows old;He made her smile of the sunshine,And He moulded her heart of pure gold;In her eyes He placed bright shining stars,In her cheeks fair roses you see;God made a wonderful mother,And He gave that dear mother to me.

2. "Super Mom" by Joanna Fuchs

Mom, you're a wonderful mother,So gentle, yet so strong. The many ways you show you careAlways make me feel I belong. You're patient when I'm foolish; You give guidance when I ask;It seems you can do most anything; You're the master of every task. You're a dependable source of comfort; You're my cushion when I fall. You help in times of trouble; You support me whenever I call.I love you more than you know; You have my total respect. If I had my choice of mothers,You'd be the one I'd select!

3. "Sonnets are full of love" by Christina Rossetti

Sonnets are full of love, and this my tomeHas many sonnets: so here now shall beOne sonnet more, a love sonnet, from meTo her whose heart is my heart’s quiet home,To my first Love, my Mother, on whose kneeI learnt love-lore that is not troublesome;Whose service is my special dignity,And she my loadstar while I go and comeAnd so because you love me, and becauseI love you, Mother, I have woven a wreathOf rhymes wherewith to crown your honored name:In you not fourscore years can dim the flameOf love, whose blessed glow transcends the lawsOf time and change and mortal life and death.

4. "Her Hands" by Maggie Pittman

Her hands held me gently from the day I took my first breath. Her hands helped to guide me as I took my first step. Her hands held me close when the tears would start to fall. Her hands were quick to show me that she would take care of it all.Her hands were there to brush my hair, or straighten a wayward bow.Her hands were often there to comfort the hurts that didn't always show. Her hands helped hold the stars in place, and encouraged me to reach. Her hands would clap and cheer and praise when I captured them at length. Her hands would also push me, though not down or in harm's way.Her hands would punctuate the words, just do what I say.Her hands sometimes had to discipline, to help bend this young tree. Her hands would shape and mold me into all she knew I could be.Her hands are now twisting with age and years of work,Her hand now needs my gentle touch to rub away the hurt. Her hands are more beautiful than anything can be.Her hands are the reason I am me.

5. "Tribute to Mother" by John Greenleaf Whittier

A picture memory brings to me;I look across the years and seeMyself beside my mother's knee.I feel her gentle hand restrainMy selfish moods, and know againA child's blind sense of wrong and pain. But wiser now,a man gray grown,My childhood's needs are better known. My mother's chastening love I own.

6. "More Than A Mother" by Kari Keshmiry

When God set the world in place, when He hung the stars up in space, when He made the land and the sea, then He made you and me.He sat back and saw all that was good,He saw things to be as they should.Just one more blessing He had in store; He created a mother, but whatever for?He knew a mother would have a special placeto shine His reflection on her child's face.A mother will walk the extra milejust to see her children smile. She'll work her fingers to the boneto make a house into a home.A mother is there to teach and guide,a mother will stay right by your side. She'll be there through your pain and strife, she'll stay constant in your life.A mother will lend a helping handuntil you have the strength to stand. She'll pick you up when you are down, when you need a friend she'll stick around.A mother is one who listens well, will keep her word; will never tell.A mother never pokes or priesMothers Day Poems but stands quietly by your side, giving you the strength you need, encouraging you to succeed.A mother is one who can be strongwhen you need someone to lean on.You're more than a mother to me;a reflection of Him in your face I see,a love that knows no boundaries.I'm glad that you chose to beall this and more to me.You share a love that knows no end, you're more than my mother, you are my friend.

7. "Thank God for our Mothers" by Julia Hunt

If life were without water, where would we be?If life were without mothers,There would be no you or me.We all need to take hold, of how precious life really is,and not take for granted the gift of love and the ability to give.Thank you to God for creating us allFor giving us our mothersSo we can stand proud and tall.Humans are no accident, no mistake or errorWe sometimes live our lives in fear of this,Even to the point of terror. But when the truth is told, and recognised by all,God does not create rubbish. He knew what he was doing when he createdme and you, but the best gift of all, is giving us loving, caringMothers who love us unconditionally through and through.None of us are perfect, that includes ourselves and family.Hold onto how precious we are and thank God for our mothers.Amen
