The ONE YA Novel Every Hufflepuff Should Read

by Cristina Arreola

Hard work. Dedication. Patience. Kindness. Loyalty. Tolerance. All these traits will seem very familiar (and very important) to those who belong to The House of Hufflepuff. Hufflepuffs have a reputation for being a bit boring and a bit dull, but those who wear the yellow and black know better: sometimes, quiet loyalty and earnest friendship are worth more than grand displays of bravery or ambition.

In fact, Hufflepuffs have a lot in common with one of my favorite book characters, Simon Spier from Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda.

Simon, a 16-year-old not-so-openly gay drama nerd, is in the throes of an online relationship with an anonymous boy who goes by Blue. When a fellow classmate blackmails and outs Simon to his entire high school, Simon's life turns upside-down. As he falls in love with Blue, grapples with his very public sexual identity, and attempts to sort through problems with his friends, Simon learns a thing or two about the important things in life: love, kindness, tolerance, and friendship. Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda will have you smiling like an absolute goon from start to finish.

Hufflepuffs (or any house, really) won't be able to resist this sweet story about falling in love, finding your place in the world, and making friends who last a lifetime.
