A lot of people look to stars for fashion inspiration, hairstyle tips, and makeup ideas among other things, but now we can also put tat envy down on the list. There is an impressive amount of celebrities with macro tattoos out there, sporting giant sleeves, impressive back art, and intricate arm ink. Instead of going for a dainty or minimalist tat on the inside of their wrist or on the side of their foot, they went all-in and got body art that will very likely stop you in your tracks.
IMO, the coolest thing is that a lot of these tattoos are in super noticeable places, so they peek out from underneath gowns and don't seem to stop the stars from booking acting or modeling gigs. It would seem that as a society we're getting more into the macro, which opens up the door for a lot more intricate, meaningful, and envy-worthy tats.
Ranging from old prayers to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles characters, celebrity macro ink is undoubtedly impressive. Especially if you've been thinking about getting one for yourself but haven't jumped over your reservations yet. Seeing the intense macro art might just push you over the edge and inspire you. So without further ado, here are 11 celebrities with macro tattoos.
1. Lena Headey
It appears Queen Cersei has some major ink. Headey sports art on her upper back in the form of an opening lotus flower and a flying bird, peppered with a healthy amount of flowers.
2. Audrina Patridge
The reality TV star rocks an interesting tattoo at the nape of her neck — one where a snake is winding its way around a heart slash apple hybrid. She's got something biblical and metaphorical all at once.
3. Kaley Cuoco
Cuoco used to have her wedding date to ex-husband Ryan Sweeting at the base of her neck but, as reported by People, she covered it up with ink of what might be a butterfly. Which I think is rather poetic.
4. Angelina Jolie
Jolie has been long-famous for her group of tattoos, including the words "know your rights" at the base of her neck and the prayer on her shoulder written in Khmer. While her biggest tattoo used to be of a Bengal tiger on her lower back, which she got on a trip to Thailand, she got yantra style tattoos in the middle of her back in 2016, which, according to People, are "Buddhist blessings for peace, love, and a prosperous life."
5. Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga has a collection of large tattoos, with everything from roses that sprawl from her lower back to the left side of her waist, to a tattoo of David Bowie in honor of the late Starman.
6. Jourdan Dunn
Model Jourdan Dunn has a gorgeous Hamsa Hand on her right arm which, as Teen Vogue noted, "has been a symbol of protection from the evil eye for many centuries in the Middle East and Northern Africa, and is also thought to give its owner success and peace." To accompany that tat, she inked "fear is not an option" on her other arm.
7. Mena Suvari
Mena Suvari made her back fierce with a no-nonsense looking lion, along with the words "Word, Sound, Power" underneath. I'm willing to believe that gettng something so large felt empowering.
8. Ruby Rose
The Orange Is The New Black actor revealed on a visit to Conan that she has around 60 tattoos, which is absolutely impressive. She has a full sleeve with a koi fish snaking through a pond with a tiger waiting at the bottom of it, along with a picture of Leonardo from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on her right forearm, and the words “Danke Schön,” German for “thank you very much," among other things.
9. Amber Rose
Rose isn't shy when it comes to ink, which is why she sports such an impressive sleeve of art. According to BET, she has everything from a portrait of her mother when she was young to her husband Wiz Khalifa surrounded by marijuana leaves to her two favorite dogs.
10. Nicki Minaj
While she didn't go for a full sleeve, Minaj has a big tattoo running down her arm in the form of calligraphy. In an interview with Billboard, she admitted that she got it when she was 16 (and a little bit of regret was involved), but it means, "God is always with you."
11. Catherine McNeil
Cat McNeil is an Australian model who's appeared on many a page of Vogue and has done her fair share of catwalks. That is pretty cool, considering she has a full back of tattoos that clearly don't get in the way of her work.
Whether you love meaningful tats or quirky ones, it's inspiring to see so many celebs rocking the macro tattoo!
