Here's How Katy Kat Mattes Differ From Others

by Amy Sciarretto

The matte lips trend is so not going anywhere. From the hard-to-nab Kylie Lip Kits to the Too Faced Melted Mattes, matte lipsticks continue to slay and sell out. Katy Perry and COVERGIRL are launching a collection, including lipsticks dubbed "Katy Kat Mattes," featuring 11 trendy shades with cat-inspired names that will retail for $6.94. It's the first time the singer has designed a line for the brand, despite serving as one of its ambassadors and "faces" for years. The Katy Kat Mattes are the first products in the line and they capitalize on the red hot, matte lip trend. How are the Katy Perry x COVERGIRL limited edition lipsticks different from other popular mattes? There is a primary difference and a secondary one.

The Katy Kat Mattes, which are available for pre-order via Walmart before arriving in stores in May, are packaged in stick form. That is, it's a traditional lipstick bullet that twists up and can be applied directly to lips from the tube itself. Unless you prefer a super precise dispersal of product via a lip brush.

Other popular and cult mattes, like the Lip Kits, the Melteds, the ColourPop Ultra Mattes, and Jeffree Star's Lip Velour, come in liquid lipstick form, packaged in a tube with a wand.

With those, you paint lips with the applicator and allow the formula to dry. The Katy Kat Mattes, the range of which is pictured above, come in twist up tubes with bullets.

Perry and her pals used their pouts to promote the new KKM shades. You can swipe the shade straight onto your lips, making summer makeup fun (and application) easy.

However, if you want to be extremely precise with your lip look, you can still use the Katy Kat Mattes with a lip pencil from the same color family or from COVERGIRL. Or you can use your own fave lip brush.

There are plenty of mass mattes on the market that are sold in stick or liquid lippie form. The KKMs seem prime for warm months, when you want to swipe and go but still have a color drenched, shine-free pucker. They feel a bit more playful.

The swatches show the depth of the colors in the Perry x COVERGIRL collection.

Another way in which the Katy Kat Mattes specifically differ from the Kylie Lip Kits? They aren't sold with a matching lip liner. That's the secondary difference that I mentioned.

Hurry up and sign up for the pre-order. You'll regret it if you don't.

My assessment of the Katy Kat Mattes is this. They are an excellent, easy way to get the matte lip look while on-the-go in the summer.
