Way back in prehistoric times when I was but a wee, young one, the Internet wasn’t a thing that everyone had in their homes. Whenever a snowstorm approached that might possibly cancel school, we couldn’t just log onto the web to find out whether we had a snow day or not; we had to tune our televisions to our local news station, watching closely for any delays or cancellations to scroll along the bottom of the screen. Not so the children of today — and thanks to the wonders of YouTube, the students of Durham, North Carolina’s Durham Academy just got the best school cancellation notice EVER.
Logging on to Durham Academy’s website gives you a pretty standard no-school notice, thanks to Winter Storm Pax:
"Due to inclement weather, Durham Academy will be closed Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014. In addition to the cancellation of classes, all after-school activities -- including the Upper School's production of the musical Urinetown -- are cancelled. “For additional division-specific information, please call the DA hotline: 919-489-2534."
However, below the listing for the DA hotline, is the innocuous, yet loaded sentence, “View Head of School Michael Ulku-Steiner and Assistant Head of School/Upper School Director Lee Hark's announcement of the cancellation on YouTube.” Clicking on the link introduces you to the aforementioned Head and Assistant Head of Durham Academy – and treats you to something absolutely amazing.
Durham Academy? You win. Even if you’re in North Carolina and are probably only getting a fraction of the snow we can expect up north.
