Celeb Couples Who Had Babies After Breaking Up
Baby after breakup? It may seem like the plot of an unnecessarily dramatic Lifetime movie, but this is a real (albeit unfortunate, timing-wise) situation that happens IRL every day. While Megan Fox has become the poster child for this kind of unique situation — following the surprising news that she is pregnant with her third child with almost-ex-husband Brian Austin Green — they're not the only celebs who have had babies after breakups. In fact, every kind of scenario you can think of in the kid-after-split model has already been played out in Hollywood: The pregnancy was planned (but the breakup wasn't); the surprise pregnancy occurred post-split; the relationship soured while the adoption or surrogacy was in progress. It's a tricky road to navigate, as becoming a parent comes with its challenges even in a healthy, committed relationship.
But no matter the couple's feelings about each other — if they want to get back together, attempt to co-parent harmoniously, or duke it out in court — everyone's priority in these types of situations should be the kid. Whether you're a celebrity or a regular ol' normie, it's the child who can only benefit from his parents getting along — even if they're no longer in a relationship at the time of his birth.
1. Megan Fox & Brian Austin Green
It was a surprise when the public found out that Fox was pregnant with her third child, particularly because she and husband Green had split in August 2015. After speculation about who the baby daddy was — and a hilarious Instagram post from Fox about which actors weren't the father — Green confirmed to People that he is the father. He told the magazine, "You know, nothing is planned. None of them are ever planned. You kind of just go with it.”
2. Teen Mom 3 Stars Mackenzie & Josh McKee
According to Us Weekly, Mackenzie McKee is pregnant with her third child. To be honest, there are many young couples on MTV's 16 & Pregnant and Teen Mom franchise who have had kids together after breaking up. But this one is surprising because of the fact that Mackenzie and Josh are allegedly "estranged," according to TMZ, and not even living together anymore, which is a bit of a shock to anyone who follows Mackenzie on Instagram, considering she's posted multiple pics of her and Josh together in these past few weeks.
Despite the fact that Mackenzie allegedly told TMZ that they've ended their relationship (the two have been married since 2013), they're still having their third child together. Mackenzie is pregnant with a boy and is due September 2016, she reportedly told the site.
Bustle has reached out to Mackenzie's rep for comment, but has not yet received a response.
3. Tom Brady & Bridget Moynahan
Tom Brady and model/actor Bridget Moynahan ended their three-year relationship in December 2006. Three months later, she later told More (according to People), she found out she was pregnant with their son John Edward Thomas Monynahan, now eight.
"[Tom] was not in the [delivery] room," she revealed. "He was there on that day and came in afterwards. He certainly wasn’t holding my hand while I pushed."
Nowadays, the two remain amicable co-parents and are both involved in their son's life.
"My son has two loving parents and an extended family, whether it’s cousins or stepmothers or boyfriends. My son is surrounded by love."
4. Dean McDermott & Mary Jo Eustace
Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott were both married to different people when they met and fell in love on the set of the Lifetime movie Mind Over Murder in July 2005. In fact, McDermott was in the process of adopting a baby girl with wife Mary Jo Eustace.
According to Radar Online, McDermott and Eustace "agreed that [McDermott] would relinquish my legal rights to [daughter] Lola, however, based on the fact [Mary Jo] was concerned our separation would jeopardize the adoption." Eustace is the sole parent of Lola, now 10, while she and McDermott share custody of their older son, Jack, 17. (McDermott also has four children with Spelling.)
5. Sherri Shepherd & Lamar Sally
Without a doubt, the most extreme situation involving a breakup and pregnancy on this list is the nightmare of Sherri Shepherd, ex-husband Lamar Sally, and their surrogate. Shepherd and Sally's surrogate was six months pregnant with their child when Shepherd filed for divorce from Sally in May 2014. Shepherd has since attempted to lessen her ties to the child, who was born in August 2014 and is not biologically hers. (According to Crushable, after finding out that Shepherd's eggs were "not viable," they elected to use Sally's sperm and a donor egg). It's since turned into an intense battle in the courtroom and in the headlines, with Shepherd fighting to prevent having her name put on the birth certificate. (The son, named Lamar Jr., is being raised by his father.)
6. Kelly Rutherford & Daniel Giersch
Gossip Girl actor Kelly Rutherford filed for divorce from her husband when she was three months pregnant with their second child, Helena. The divorce and subsequent custody battle over their two children has since turned into the kind of custody nightmare that goes way beyond anything on Lifetime.
7. Kelis & Nas
Kelis was seven months pregnant with her son when she filed for divorce from rapper husband Nas in April 2009. Their son, Knight, is now seven and is the proud older brother of Kelis' second son, whom she welcomed with husband Mike Mora in November 2015.
8. Denise Richards & Charlie Sheen
Denise Richards was pregnant with her second child (Lola, now 10), when she filed for divorce from husband Charlie Sheen in March 2005. The two have had serious custody battles throughout the years, including a time when Richards actually had temporary custody of Sheen and Brooke Mueller's twin sons, Max and Bob, according to People.
While having a child after a breakup is no easy feat (whether or not you're in the public eye), there's at least proof that it's not uncommon.
