'Rogue One' Calls Back To A Lot Of 'Star Wars'
Assuming that you didn't hop on the Star Wars bandwagon upon the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the new trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story gives fans all the feels. Not only is the story one that takes place in the time period right after Anakin Skywalker become Darth Vader, and right at the cusp of when Luke Skywalker discovers his Jedi capabilities, but it's also a throwback for fans with The Force Awakens fresh in their minds. Rogue One mixes the time of the Empire's rule with the modern day technology of today. And, from the looks of the trailer, my hopes are way higher for this spin-off film than my feelings are about the modern day take on the prequels from the early-'00s. Basically, the Rogue One trailer is giving fans all of the necessary Star Wars nostalgia.
Just from watching the trailer it has already become clear that Star Wars fans are in for a nice dose of galaxy time travel (even if the series does already take place a long time ago). From the return of classic characters, the revival of some of your favorite Imperial weapons, and even the return to locations you didn't get to revisit in Episode VII, Director Gareth Edwards is proving that he can take on the task of making a Star Wars movie just as well as J.J. Abrams can. Here are just some of the nostalgic pieces you may have noticed from the Rogue One: A Star Wars Story trailer.
1. The Death Star
At this point in time, the Death Star was just being created — and it's up to Jyn Erso to steal the plans and get them to the Rebellion. I have to say, seeing the Death Star in all of its highly detailed, modern-day technological glory really is a beautiful sight. Now just imagine what it might look like in IMAX.
2. AT-AT Walkers
AT-AT Walkers are way more than just a place for Rey to camp out in in this film. In fact, they are at the peak of their destruction capabilities, so you better watch where you're walking.
3. Yavin 4
This rebel is led through the famous Yavin 4 base during the course of the trailer. Watching brief glimpses of it makes you want to gear up and jump in on the action. While a Rebellion base may not be as nostalgic as seeing the Millennium Falcon in Episode VII, it sure brings you back to a time where the battle against the Imperial Empire was on.
4. Mon Mothma
Mon Mothma has also appeared in Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Episode VI — Return of the Jedi. While it isn't the same actress as those films, there's really no denying how spot on that casting is. Seriously, they might as well have created a time machine back to her original appearance in Episode VI.
5. Storm Troopers
Now I know what you're thinking. What's the big deal about Storm Troopers? We already saw them in The Force Awakens. But, the thing is, these Storm Troopers are from way before the days of Finn escaping. In fact, it can be called into question whether or not these Troopers are actually Clones.
6. Gonk Droid
Nothing says Star Wars quite like this lovable walking piece of tin. While this droid did show up in Episode VII, seeing it in the trailer at a time way before The Force Awakens says something else entirely.
7. Darth Vader?
OK, so I'm not totally sure that the dark-cloaked figure in the trailer actually is Darth Vader. But, considering that he is set to appear and his breathing is heard, I'm thinking a hood may be an addition to his closet we never knew about. If not, then this character is definitely someone else from the past that we are totally not expecting. Dare I say General Palpatine?
Didn't catch all of these? Check out the trailer again and see what you can find. Then expect a whole lot more when Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters on December 16, 2016.
