Sleepy Hollow is about to wrap up it's latest dalliance with the supernatural, and on behalf of Team Witness, I'm getting a little antsy. Will Sleepy Hollow be renewed for Season 4? If the show returns, Season 4 will likely premiere in September, possibly October. However, we're not quite there yet.
Ratings have been less than stellar and TVLine's Renewal Scorecard thinks that the show could go either way. Since Season 1, Sleepy Hollow has dropped a bit in popularity, but the audience remains strong. There are rumors that the series has been canceled because when Fox announced renewals for a number of shows (including Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Bones, Scream Queens, Gotham, and Empire), Sleepy Hollow was not included. Perhaps the network is waiting on negotiations or some kind of analysis. However, there has been no announcement of cancellation, and as far as I’m concerned, no news is good news.
The recent death of Zach Appleman's character Joe Corbin additionally seems to have fans worried that the show is not long for this world — however, I don't think that's a good measure. If an ensemble series can't survive the death of a semi-major character, especially one who has not been there from the start, that's a big problem. Joe is not the first to leave Sleepy Hollow for good, and there's still plenty of story to tell without him.
And if Fox is worried that Sleepy Hollow is losing steam, I still think the smartest move would be to renew it for a final season. It has so much mythology, and the writers should be given the chance to end the series in the way it deserves. Even if the final season is just a handful of episodes at midseason, that would still help both fans and characters to finish the story. Hopefully, Sleepy Hollow will return for a fourth season — no matter how small — to give us that closure.
