11 Times Rihanna Rocked A Statement Lip Color

Rihanna's style is usually out-there in the best of ways, consisting of the kinds of looks that would probably seem ridiculous on any other human, but that appear effortlessly cool when worn by her. Rihanna's bold lip colors are no exception, often bringing together an entire outfit through a perfect color match between the lipstick and the clothes. She seemingly knows that her style is amazing, which makes it even easier for this star to take risks unlike those of anyone else.

Rihanna's made herself an icon these past couple of years due to her casual street style and high fashion red carpet looks. If I saw her in army pants and flip flops, I'd probably go out and buy army pants and flip flops, too. I never would've thought of rocking metallic green lipstick before I saw the singer wear it at the first iHeartRadio awards. But now it's definitely an option in my arsenal.

It's pretty rare for Rihanna to not be wearing a bold lip color, but the look always feels like more of a statement than an accessory. Drawing attention to her natural beauty as well as her MUA's talent, a statement hue can make the lips the entire focus of an look — rather than an addition to it. That's precisely what Rihanna managed when rocking these 11 bold colors.

1. Metallic Green

This entire look is one of my favorites of all time — from the bantu knots to the Givenchy couture dress, Rihanna pulled this alternative alien fantasy together with a deep, metallic green lip.

2. Deep Burgundy

Rihanna held onto her edge when wearing a pastel pink outfit for the MAC Aids Fund film premiere of It's Not Over by styling it with a gorgeous burgundy lipstick. It's a very similar shade to MAC's Diva matte for anyone hoping to cop the look.

3. Subtle Mauve

Here Rihanna proved that a subtle color can make just as much of a statement as a bold one. The hue was just different enough from her outfit to make her mouth stand out — especially with her one-of-a-kind, gorgeous cupid's bow.

4. All Lilac Everything

This look is kind of reminiscent of when Rihanna rocked all green Versace everything for the iHeartRadio music awards in 2015. RiRi's casual festival look consisted of matching her lips to her floor-length lilac coat. The lipstick really brought it all together, IMO.

5. Deep Red

Deep red lipstick is my favorite kind of lipstick on anyone, so I had to include RiRi wearing it on this list. Making the statement color of an all-black outfit be the lipstick means everyone will pay attention to how beautiful your face is.

6. RiRi Woo

Rihanna's own lipstick for MAC's Viva Glam range sold out in three hours and is proof of why Rihanna is the reigning supreme of bold lip colors.

7. The Nude Lip

What a throwback! Seriously, that hair was everything.

By foregoing the obvious matching bright lip color, RiRi's nude lip shade totally stood out.

8. Bright Orange

Here's another out-there color that just works with Rihanna's vibe — something especially impressive for an outfit that demands your attention just as much.

9. Icy Blue

For her River Island clothing launch in 2013, Rihanna went for a more casual street style vibe, but made it pop with that brilliant blue lip.

10. Goth Vibes

Very rarely do I think a human can pull off black lipstick outside of mall goths (whose non-ironic wearing of black lippie warms my heart). But Rihanna killed it with her all-black everything look for her album launch in 2015.

11. A Darker Purple

Remember when Rihanna took the stage at Victoria's Secret and everyone collectively lost their minds over how brilliant she was? Well, she contrasted that gorgeous, lacy pink outfit with a dark purple lip and proved that your lipstick doesn't have to match anything on your outfit. You can just let it stand out all on its own.

Even if you're not the biggest fan of Rihanna's style — though how could you not be? — it's impossible to deny the singer's ability to rock a statement lip. By taking risks with her makeup just as much as she does with her outfits, Rihanna cements her place as a style icon.
