These Movies Are Perf For Your Next BFF Film Night

by S. Atkinson

Whole new month, whole new movie selection: It's the beginning of April which means streaming service Amazon Prime has a plethora of new viewing options for your optic pleasure. Whoever's curating the service is doing a grade-A job, too: Amazon Prime have got a nice mix of titles to watch with your BFF here, from old classics (The Big Lebowski, Gremlins) to oldie-but-goodie rom-coms (think Meg Ryan at her most adorable in You've Got Mail, plus baby Gwyneth Paltrow all English in Sliding Doors) to more recent masterpieces of the silver screen (Tangerine, Pawn Sacrifice). Me likey.

So with an eye to budgeting for your summer squad goals (ie. that insane Airbnb mansion in Southern Italy this July for the ultimate in luxurious European holidays), give that extravagant night out a miss and have a well-deserved evening curled up on the couch with your favourite movie-buff bestie. You guys earned it, OK? I love cocktails as much as the next urban dwelling 20-something, but trust me, you're going to have a way better night eating popcorn with your platonic soul twin than being grinded up on by sweaty strangers while sipping $15 margaritas. So without further ado, here's the ultimate new Amazon Prime titles to enjoy with your best friend.

1. The Big Lebowski (Available Now)

Despite this being compulsory cult viewing, you'd be surprised just how many perfectly good BFFs who seem completely savvy to pop culture who have never seen this. True story. Ask your best friend when they're drunk enough to tell you the truth and not bullsh*t their way out of it and when they confess, schedule in an emergency viewing, stat. This is Raymond Chandler meets Cohen brothers meets Broad City. Hilarious stoner hijinks and mystery.

2. Ferris Bueller's Day Off (Available Now)

The ultimate buddy movie debuting on Amazon Prime? The ultimate excuse for pulling a scheduled sickie in honor of everyone's favorite slacker king, Ferris Bueller with your BFF.

3. Men In Black II (Available Now)

OK, OK! This is not, like, Shakespeare or something. But Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith's indisputable chemistry as a buddy act makes this film a romp to watch.

4. The Holiday (Available Now)

Two ladies mending each other's distressing love lives via a house swap? Ugh, this film is too. Much. Also provides great post-bottle of wine debate fodder, namely, who lucks out most here? Cameron Diaz gets her flirt on with Jude Law, while Kate Winslet gets paired up with Jack Black post an unflattering haircut. But, while Jude Law is undeniably easy on the eye, good God, he's bland. Your homework for the week: please watch and then discuss amongst yourselves.

5. Gremlins (Available Now)

Released the same weekend as Ghostbusters in 1984, this film has a similar tonality: think a mix between comedy and horror. While a movie about mogwais (small, furry, not un-cute monsters) unleashing havoc on a town shouldn't be scary, there are definitely jumpy parts: I reckon having your best friend there to cling onto during the jumpy bits is a must.

6. Risky Business (Available Now)

The film that launched Tom Cruise's career: he looks eerily pre-adolescent here. Think Ferris Bueller, if Ferris Bueller was into prostitutes.

7. You've Got Mail (Available Now)

Warning: Watching this movie could lead you to get an adorable bob, pursue a career in the bookstore biz and become the personification of twee.

8. Mad Max (Available From April 12)

Before there was Fury Road, there was Mad Max. Feast your eyes on some retro dystopian splendor to discover why this film won the Guinness World Record for most profitable movie between 1980 and 1999.

9. Sliding Doors (Available From April 9)

Think rom-com meets vaguely magical-realism-y philosophical concept. Gwyneth Paltrow either just catches the train – or doesn't, and as such either catches her boyfriend cheating or doesn't.

10. Pawn Sacrifice (Available From April 22)

This icily cerebal biopic about paranoid chess master Bobby Fischer is ideal viewing for the wannabe-auteur in your friendship group.

11. Ides Of March (Available From April 30)

Pay tribute to you and your best friend being a happenin' power-duo with the ultimate cinematic pairing: Ryan Gosling and George Clooney. Just like you and your best friend, it's impossible to tell who's smoother here.
