The '90s and '00s seem rather tame, by today's celebrity standards, but once upon a time, things were seriously scandalous, and trying to copy your favorite star's style was something out of your parents' worst nightmare. Because things have changed so much (or maybe you've repressed some of your more embarrassing childhood fashion moments), allow me to remind you of some outfits that totally got you grounded back in the day. Just because it worked on TRL did not mean it would fly in real life.

We've all been there — we saw an outfit on our favorite celebrity, copied it even though we knew our parents would not be pleased, and totally got grounded when they eventually found out. Let's just say — my phone and Internet privileges were constantly in jeopardy during my Britney Spears obsession phase. Though these outfits might not seem as offensive in 2016, back when we were growing up, they were totally rebellious, and you couldn't wait to grow up, get out of the house, and wear them without worry. Though luckily, for some of these things, by the time I grew up, I didn't have any desire to wear them anymore. That's always the way it goes.

This one pained me so much as a die-hard Britney fan, but showing your stomach was totally "inappropriate." But today, crop tops are like, chic. How times have changed...

There was no universe in which your parents were down with ultra low-rise jeans that exposed your underwear. And they were totally justified with this one.

3. Mini Dresses

Did anyone else have to measure their hemline with a ruler?

Showing your shoulders was a total no-no.

...so that meant spaghetti straps were out, too.

Try as you might, your parents would not let you be Beyonce.
