'Aquaman' is Looking Better & Better

by Olivia Truffaut-Wong

When it was announced that Aquaman would be joining Batman and Superman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and DC's Justice League movies, a lot of people didn't know how to react. Aquaman? The blonde guy who talks to dolphins? He's going to be fighting with Batman and Superman? And then Jason Momoa, of Game of Thrones fame, was cast, and the reaction shifted. Suddenly, the character of Aquaman was interesting. At well over six-feet tall, Momoa is imposing, to say the least, and the fact that he isn't another blonde, blue-eyed actor (he's part Native Hawaiian) meant that onscreen superheroes were finally getting away from the overwhelming whiteness of the original comics. A new kind of Aquaman, he most certainly is. But, other than Momoa's casting, very little is known about the superhero's role in BvS or the planned Aquaman solo movie. But, there's no doubt that after getting a taste of Aquaman in BvS, we're going to want more. So, here's everything to know about Aquaman so far.

First, here's when Aquaman is going to come out. The release date on the King of the Seas' first solo outing is currently set for July 2018. Though, as we all know well, release dates projected so far into the future can change. After making his secretive debut in Batman v Superman, but before headlining his own film, Momoa's Aquaman will appear in The Justice League Part One, currently in pre-production. As for Aquaman's big screen look, that's something you can already know:

Just kidding! Here's what Aquaman will actually look like, courtesy of BvS director Zack Snyder who tweeted out a photo of Momoa in costume back in February of 2015 to tease the hero's BvS cameo.

In June, fans got a bit more information on the solo Aquaman film when it was announced that James Wan (Furious 7) would be directing a script from David Johnson (Wrath of the Titans) and Kurt Johnstad (300). Along with the director announcement, Warner Bros. also revealed the plot of Aquaman, which, according to Variety , is about an Aquaman "who is caught between a surface world constantly ravaging the sea and Atlanteans looking to lash out in revolt."

Officially, nothing more on the plot of Aquaman has been revealed. However, director Jeff Nichols, who was a contender to helm the film, did let slip a few details while discussing his relationship with Warner Bros. and his new film, Midnight Special. In an interview with Deadline , Nichols admitted that he had spoken to the studio about the DC superhero, saying, "Aquaman has the father-son thing going on, and he's got a pretty interesting plot line." So, perhaps in addition to trying to keep the seas safe from humans up above, Aquaman will also be dealing with some daddy issues.

With production on Aquaman still a ways off, there are infinitely more things fans don't know about the film than things we do know. It's likely that more details about the plot will be revealed as casting moves forward. Just last week, the studio announced that Amber Heard would be joining Momoa in Aquaman as his wife, Mera, the Queen of Atlantis. Heard hasn't said much about the role, but she did dish on her costume, which is still in the works. "It's like half suit of armor, half scales," Heard told Entertainment Tonight . Hm, intriguing.

As information on Aquaman continues to trickle out, it looks like fans — Aquahoneys, if you will — will just have to get their fix of the superhero from Batman v Superman and Justice League.
