Roxxon Has Popped Up In More Than 'Daredevil'

by Leah Marilla Thomas

Of all the conspiracies on Daredevil there's one that seems to have snuck up on us in terms of the Marvel Universe. Spoilers ahead for Daredevil Season 2, Episode 5 and beyond. What is the Roxxon Corporation on Daredevil ? The energy company has been popping up a lot in the MCU lately.

When Elektra arrives on Daredevil, she hires Matt Murdock to help her investigate corruption in the Japanese branch of Roxxon Oil, who has ties to the Yakuza. They've been mentioned before on the Netflix series. When Foggy and Matt interned at the law firm Landman and Zack, they represented Roxxon in a cruel case when the company sued an employee who got sick at work for damages because he told his doctor classified information to secure a diagnosis. This didn't sit well with Murdock, and it's part of why he started his own firm.

However, from gas stations in the Iron Man movies and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to the oil spill at the end of Iron Man 3 that almost killed President Matthew Ellis kept out of the public eye, this company has been on the fringe of the Marvel Universe since the start.

In the Marvel Universe, both cinematic and comic, Roxxon has gone be many names. Some of those include Roxxon Oil, Roxxon Brain Trust, and Roxxon Energy Corporation to name a few. On the surface, they are a business competitor with Stark Industries. In the comics, they had a hand in Howard and Maria Stark's deaths. On Agent Carter, they stole and developed Howard Stark's weapons and were run by a man named Hugh Jones, who was part of the Council of Nine. Hugh Jones used to be friends with Howard Stark, but Mrs. Jones got between them.

Whether this is just a long-running Easter Egg or a growing threat is hard to say. They've clearly been involved with Marvel heroes since the very beginning, so I would keep my eye on Roxxon from hear on out, wherever they pop up next.
