Another season of The Bachelor, another heartbroken contestant picking up the pieces at the end. Ben Higgins ultimately chose Lauren Bushnell over JoJo Fletcher in the Season 20 finale, and though JoJo was chosen to be the next Bachelorette and will ultimately be OK, it was still a tough break. While I was watching JoJo’s journey on The Bachelor , I was struck by just how similar JoJo’s story was to that of another JoJo’s tale — it’s almost the same as seminal pop hit “Leave (Get Out)” by pop singer JoJo?
Don’t believe me? It’s true. The first stanza of “Leave (Get Out)” goes a little something like this:
I've been waiting all day for ya babeSo won't cha come and sit and talk to meAnd tell me how we're gonna be together alwaysHope you know that when it's late at nightI hold on to my pillow tightAnd think of how you promised me forever
What did Ben do to JoJo when he was on The Bachelor? He said that he loved her and that she was his best friend and that they would be together forever. Ben said he saw a real future with JoJo, and then he blindsided her and dumped her for Lauren B.
The bridge of the song really drives the song (and JoJo’s Bachelor story) home, as singer JoJo belts:
I wanted you right here with me but I have no choice you've gotta leaveBecause my heart is breakin'With every word I'm sayin'I gave up everything I hadOn something that just wouldn't lastBut I refuse to cryNo tears will fall from these eyes.
The bridge is Bachelor JoJo’s rising from the ashes — though she was heartbroken about Ben dumping her on the show, she has had time to process the breakup, she’s moving on, and JoJo is going to be the new Bachelorette. There’s no time for more tears to fall from her eyes, because she has 25 new men to court. Are JoJo and JoJo the same person? I’ve never seen them in the same place, so I couldn’t tell you. What I can tell you is that both are badass ladies who I want to continue to see on my television.
