Layla Grant’s had some bad luck on Nashville, but it’s nothing that some fresh new writing and maybe a sassy haircut won’t fix. In fact, Aubrey Peeples, who plays Layla on Nashville , assures Bustle that her character's luck is about to change when Season 4 returns to ABC on Wednesday night at 10 p.m. “In the back half of the season, we’re going to see a completely different side of Layla," Peeples says. "She might experience a new relationship that will completely change her.” Now the only question is, with who?
However, when I press Peeples for more information about what else Layla has coming up, she definitely has her lips locked. I just need to know that Layla will recover from Jeff Fordham's death and move on to a happy, healthy relationship, that she’ll finally get the hit record she’s always desired. She definitely deserves to be happy in both her personal and professional life as Nashville continues. Luckily, Peeples is able to offer a few hints about Layla’s storyline for the rest of the season — in emoji form. These clues may take some deciphering, but they should be enough to reassure fans of good things ahead this season.
So we have a couple holding hands, a guitar, a microphone, and a heart-eyes face. Here's what that all could mean.
Couple Holding Hands
Layla has to be in love. When you consider Peeples' other hint, Layla is probably about to meet the love of her life, and she deserves it. First she married Will, only to be blindsided when he came out to her and eventually divorce him, and then her emotionally abusive boyfriend fell off a roof. Layla needs a real love. Peeples agrees, saying, "I would really like to see a love interest treat Layla right … I think it would help her to grow so much as a person."
Microphone & Guitar
Music is already the main focus of Nashville, but I'm hoping that these two emoji mean Layla will hit her songwriting stride and finally pen that big hit we've been waiting for. Every time she gets close to the spotlight, someone yanks it away, so now that Markus is gone (I hope, anyway), Rayna can dedicate herself to producing Layla's album and make it a huge success. Also, Jeff's death is probably going to inspire Layla's songwriting in a major way. Actually, so would a new boyfriend. A phoenix rising from the ashes!
Heart-Eyes
Some people could paint this as a "love" face, but I want to take it a little further — I think this is the face that means you're just supremely happy. With a new love and some really great new music, Layla could have the propensity to be blissfully happy and successful on Nashville. Lord knows the girl deserves it. She's spent too much time crying over everyone else on the show that she needs to start smiling for once.
Will my emoji extrapolation come true? For Layla's sake, I sure hope so.
