What Tris Prior & Katniss Everdeen Have In Common

by Allie Funk

Jennifer Lawrence and Shailene Woodley are two of the most famous young female actors of their generation, and their characters Katniss Everdeen and Tris Prior, respectively, are arguably the two most famous heroines of the YA dystopian genre. Although Katniss is from The Hunger Games franchise and Tris is in the Divergent series, the teens actually have a lot in common. They both started as characters in book trilogies who made the jump to the big screen after their series proved to be hugely popular. They're both teenage girls living in a downer of a dystopia run by an insidious system that becomes increasingly more malevolent as the series goes on. And they’re both courageous, intelligent, and just generally pretty badass women.

Of course, there are some major differences between the characters. Katniss became a household name after uttering the words “I volunteer as Tribute” in the first book and movie, while Tris’ fame stems from the revelation that she was Divergent in her first book and movie. The exact nature of the challenges faced by the two characters also vary greatly, as do the ways that the teens handle said challenges. They also have different personality traits, different appearances, and very different relationships with the people around them. Yet despite all this, it's impossible not to compare the two, considering they are, after all, leading two of the biggest franchises around. Take a closer look at how they stack up against one another in the chart below.
