Petra Faced Mansplaining On 'Jane The Virgin'

by Kelly Schremph

I've always been a Team Michael fan on Jane the Virgin, however, that doesn't mean that I also haven't enjoyed Rafael as a character in his own way. I mean, he's certainly nice to look at. That being said, he definitely didn't do himself any favors on the popularity scale during Monday night's episode when Rafael started mansplaining Petra's mood on Jane the Virgin . After showing Rafael the unwanted press the Marbella has been attracting lately — you know, on account of all the murders that have taken place there — she starts panicking and decides they need to work with their team to create a new ad campaign ASAP.

Sounds pretty smart, right? Otherwise, they're practically loosing a ton business every day that they don't take action. However, instead complimenting Petra on her integrity and initiative, Rafael interpreted her growing anxiety as pregnancy nesting and explained how Jane went through the same thing. While I'm sure that he had good intentions with this remark, it wasn't fair to Petra to just shuffle her concerns aside with the explanation of overactive hormones. Their hotel is in serious financial trouble and she's about to give birth to twins. Her panic is not hormonal. It's just plain logical and it was frustrating that he couldn't seem to understand that, which led to those condescending (and downright patronizing) remarks.

Don't get me wrong, I know Rafael is going through a tough time right now with the whole Jane-loves-Michael thing. But that still doesn't excuse such behavior and insensitivity. Luckily, Petra is a force to be reckoned with and stood up for herself immediately when this happened. (Let's just call it Petra-splaining.) So hopefully this managed to get through to him a bit. I want to keep liking Rafael, but between this and his jealousy toward Michael, he's making the job a lot harder than it used to be.
