Even though fans got their hopes up in the fall, Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber are over. Gomez is very much single and proud of it (despite Ryan Seacrest's awkward response on the Grammys red carpet). She also made it clear in an interview with Rolling Stone that she would prefer to not be asked about Bieber. Despite Jelena officially being dunzo, Biebs is still holding onto the relationship — at least in some capacity. In a video for GQ, the "Sorry" singer shares the stories behind his tattoos and there's one that stands out in particular: his tattoo of his "ex-girlfriend." When it gets to that part, the 21-year-old tries to play it cool, saying,
Uh, this is my ex-girlfriend. So I kinda tried to cover her face up with some shading, but people still know.
Of course people still know. After all, he has Gomez's face tattooed on his body forever. Maybe the fact that she's permanently etched on his skin is what caused him to repeatedly try to make it work and post those throwbacks on Instagram. It could also explain his "My Girl" serenade back in November. Maybe he was just inspired by his Gomez tattoo. He just looked down, saw her face on his arm, and knew their love was meant-to-be.
Let's be real, though. This whole situation is undeniably awkward. Skip ahead to the 1:24 mark to watch for yourself.
Considering Gomez told Rolling Stone in January, "Honestly, what I would love to be printed is that I am so beyond done with talking about that, and him," I can imagine Bieber would want to cover it up, or at least get it shaded. It may be a painful reminder of his past. Plus, his new maybe-girlfriend Hailey Baldwin (although they're not an "exclusive couple") probably doesn't love seeing Gomez's face everytime she looks at Bieb's forearm.
Then again, as you can see in the photo, it doesn't look that much like Gomez. It's unclear what the tattoo looked like before the shading, but at this point, the face and angel wings make it look like the "Same Old Love" singer was combined with some kind of bird. It's as if Gomez is a character in one of those Animorphs books.
Not only did the GQ video reveal J. Biebs still has Gomez's face on his body, but he confessed his least favorite type of tattoo. "I can't really say I feel lower back tattoos on a male or female," he said. "I think David Beckham has a lower tramp stamp. That's no good." You know his opinion is strong when he even disses Beckham in the process. But since Bieber has plenty of tattoos himself, I don't think he should be able to judge others' body art decisions.
For the record, I'm over here still cringing about Bieb's tattoo. But at least the Jelena shippers out there have a permanent way to remember the good old days.
