Well, this is a total bummer. If you're a huge fan of Now and Then (like myself), then prepare yourselves for some disheartening news. Apparently, Devon Sawa and Christina Ricci never dated in real life. "That story of all the Now and Then girls fighting over me was a little blown out of proportion," Sawa revealed to Us Weekly. "Someone had written that me and Christina [Ricci] had a thing, which wasn’t true. We were all so young and so innocent."
Now, some of you might be confused, especially since this whole "did any of the Now and Then cast hook up" topic was brought up during a 20th anniversary screening celebration in October 2015. According to E! News, there was a bet between Ricci (Roberta), Ashleigh Aston Moore (Chrissy), Thora Birch (Teeny), and Gaby Hoffman (Samantha) about who would "get with" Sawa during filming. "There was some kind of contest, I remember they said, 'get with Devon,'" executive producer Jennifer Todd recalled. "We were like, 'What does get with mean?!'"
Birch said Ricci won the so-called bet. As for Sawa, he responded at the time with "no comment." The now 37-year-old actor added, "I was the only 15-year-old boy with the cast of the hottest young girls in town, so it was a lot of fun."
I can see how Sawa's answer might be misinterpreted as, "Yeah, they totally had a thing." However, maybe he said "no comment" because he really didn't want it to get blown out of proportion, and look, he now has to clear up the rumors even further. Plus, saying it was fun as a teenage boy to be surrounded by girls doesn't exactly mean, "Yeah, Ricci and I hooked up." Who wouldn't love hanging out with a group of pretty, talented, and successful actors your own age?
Whatever the case, it's still kind of a let down, because I remember rooting for Sawa and Ricci as a couple both on and off screen. Even as teenagers, their chemistry was off the charts. I mean, remember their Now and Then moments as Scott Wormer and Roberta?
What about that time they starred together in Casper? I'm pretty sure everyone has uttered, "Can I keep you?" at least once in their life.
FYI, Sawa told Us Weekly that the only time he said those words was while filming the 1995 film. "I haven’t said those words since I shot Casper," he admitted. "Never! Never. I’m very shy about stuff like that, so I don’t think I could have ever mustered up the courage to use that as a pickup line."
So, even if your heart is breaking that Scott and Roberta never had "a thing" in real life, at least Now and Then fans can relive their adorable, chemistry-filled moments throughout the movie.
