The Future Of 'Full Frontal' Summed Up In One Joke

by Michelle Lulic

TBS' latest late night show, Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, started off on a high note Monday night with its influx of jokes and clear lack of a boundary on all topics political and feminist. However, there was one Full Frontal with Samantha Bee joke that easily clues us into what we can expect from the future of what the show will offer. With the opening joke bringing awareness to the fact that the media is far too interested in the fact that Samantha Bee is a woman in late night, the host is setting the record straight about the types of questions female comedians are often faced with and the ways in which women may be — generally — looked at as being on a different level than your average male late night television host.

The sketch has questions like "How can I watch the show as a man?," "What's it like to be a female woman?," and "Is there a problem with your ovaries falling out at any minute?," all of which throw one main point at the audience. These questions shouldn't be what's being asked. That's right. While Samantha Bee may have to address the obstacles that are those hilariously exaggerated questions, in this joke alone it becomes clear that she is not going to take any of that gender discrimination. In fact, the ways in which she'll address her real opinions on what's being said is by turning the tables around — by saying something blatantly obscure in response. Just take a look at her explanation for yourself.

Honestly, that has to be one of the best responses to a ridiculous female-geared question I have ever heard. Samantha Bee doesn't just answer the questions or seem to take any offense by them. Instead, she gives her best straight-faced answer, saying that only "magic" could be responsible for such a crazy thing to happen. Then, with a satanic-like ritual, what appear to be zombies, and a blatant "We're all witches!" comment to boot, the reporters are immediately shut up. Genius, right?

But what does this tell us about the future of Full Frontal? Bee is starting off her show by clarifying that even the thought of treating her differently because she's a woman in unnecessary and uncalled for. And some of the rest of the jokes throughout the premiere seemed to reflect this very idea as well, like when she addresses comments from one specific politician by joking with the very blunt generalization of, "We're all sluts." Honestly, she is standing up for all women here. She is slowly but surely working to break down the existing entertainment industry divides, and it's nothing less than amazing.

More wonderful quips and gender-bending awesomeness airs on Full Frontal With Samantha Bee Monday nights at 10:30 p.m. EST on TBS. And, yes, the theme song of the show is the popular Peaches song, "Boys Wanna Be Her." I think I'm in love already.
