What's In A Molten Chocolate Latte?

by Lucia Peters

As you may have heard, Starbucks — well known for its spectacular seasonal beverages — has just unleashed a trio of Valentine’s Day drinks upon the world. This is obviously exciting news, because if there’s anything I love more than coffee, it’s seasonally appropriate coffee; however, I’ll confess that I’m mostly interested in just one of the three: The Molten Chocolate Latte. Why? Because of what’s in a Starbucks Molten Chocolate Latte. Basically, it sounds like the coffee equivalent of a chocolate lava cake, and that? That is something I can totally get behind.

Here’s the deal: From Feb. 8 (that’s today, people) through Valentine’s Day on Feb. 14, Starbucks will be offering three fancy-schmancy new drinks in honor of the holiday. The trio, which covers the latte lovers, the Frappuccino fans, and the hot chocolate enthusiasts, are all variations on the same theme: Molten Chocolate, which in this case means a glorious mix of melted chocolate, espresso, and mocha sauce. So whether you’re a Molten Chocolate Latte kind of person, a Molten Chocolate Frappuccino kind of person, or a Molten Hot Chocolate kind of person, there’s something here for you — although given how wonderfully over-the-top they all sound, I’d recommend taking them in small doses. There is such a thing as too much of a good thing, you know?

So: What exactly is it about the Molten Chocolate Latte in particular that’s got me all fired up? The six drool-worthy ingredients that go into it, of course. Here’s how the limited-edition beverage breaks down, bit by bit:

1. Espresso

Duh. It wouldn’t be a latte without it.

2. Chocolaty Chips

But they’re not just tossed on top of your latte; they’re actually melted directly into the espresso. Yes, please!

3. Steamed Milk

Another “duh” ingredient, because again, it’s not a latte without it. But hey, since all Starbucks drinks are endlessly customizable, you can take your pick when it comes to the type of milk, whether it’s two percent or coconut milk.

4. Bittersweet Mocha Sauce

The steamed milk is combined with this stuff, which sounds magnificently decadent to me.

5. Mocha and Espresso-Infused Whipped Cream

Because why settle for regular whipped cream when you could have whipped cream that’s been dialed up to 11?

6. Espresso Mocha Drizzle

Every fancy latte needs a fancy finishing touch.

And hey, if you live somewhere that isn’t as cold as where I currently am, good news: You can get this sucker iced, too. So go ahead. Treat yourself. Treat someone else. Treat everyone. You deserve it. Happy almost-Valentine’s Day!
