That's Not Gaga In The 'Independence Day' Trailer

by Tanya Ghahremani

If managed to catch the Independence Day: Resurgence trailer during Sunday's Super Bowl and wondered if, somehow, the film's studio 20th Century Fox had managed to nab a recording of Lady Gaga's amazing Super Bowl 50 performance of the National Anthem for the soundtrack, here's a quick update: Turns out, that isn't the case. The performance of America's most patriotic track is certainly beautiful in the trailer, but the singer isn't Lady Gaga. So, it's worth wondering: Who sings the National Anthem in the Independence Day: Resurgence trailer?

Luckily, the answer isn't that difficult to pinpoint: The singer is actually Angie Johnson, an Air Force veteran who's best known for appearing on The Voice during Season 2 of the series. Since her appearance on the singing competition series, Johnson has gone on to release her own music, and is currently based in Nashville. She's performed the National Anthem at sporting events before, including a Seattle Seahawks vs. Baltimore Ravens game in 2011. The clip of her singing the National Anthem at that particular game actually sounds fairly similar to the rendition heard in the Independence Day: Resurgence trailer — it's possible it could be the same performance.

Just listen for yourself:

And compare to the trailer:

Pretty similar, no? Whether it is that particular performance or not, it definitely sounds like a live rendition of Johnson's National Anthem was used in the trailer.

Independence Day: Resurgence will hit theaters June 24.
