Pepsi & Janelle Monae Team Up For Super Bowl Ad

by Kristie Rohwedder

It has happened again: PepsiCo sent yet another recording artist on a time travel adventure in the name of advertising. Thursday, Pepsi released "The Joy of Dance," the cola company's Super Bowl 50 commercial starring Janelle Monáe. In the TV spot, the critically acclaimed singer/songwriter/dancer cuts a rug through the decades; We see Monáe do the Mashed Potato to the Countours’ 1962 hit “Do You Love Me,” pay up homage to Madonna, and dance it out to her own rendition of the “Joy of Cola” jingle. The commercial is scheduled to air right before Sunday's halftime extravaganza.

Now, if you are not familiar with the latest Pepsi spokesperson's body of work, to you I say this: Dear friend, you need to fix that right now because every last person on the planet needs the incomparable Janelle Monáe in their life because Janelle Monáe is EVERYTHING.

While I could ramble on and on and on about how much I love Janelle Monáe, I think the best thing to do is let the incomparable musician's work do the talking. So go ahead fetch your good headphones and your good goggles, because we are about to watch some J. Monáe music videos and performance videos that are nothing short of magical.

Whether the Pepsi ad was your introduction to Monáe or you are already a diehard Fandroid, these vids are definitely worth a watch (and a re-watch).

The Music Video For "Yoga" Featuring Jidenna

This song and this video are two of the best things to come out of 2015. Be sure to keep an eye out for actress Tessa Thompson dancing alongside Monáe in the Dave Meyers-directed clip.

"Dance Apocalyptic" On The Late Show With David Letterman (2013)

In the middle of her high-energy performance, Monáe pulls a Drew Barrymore (minus the flashing, that is).

The Music Video For "Q.U.E.E.N" Featuring Erykah Badu

This duo? Are you kidding me? We might as well forget about ever being worthy, because we will never be worthy.

"Tightrope" At Women Of Soul: In Performance At The White House (2014)

In which Janelle Monáe serenades POTUS and FLOTUS.

"The Power Of Yet" On Sesame Street

And just when you thought she couldn't be more charming, Monáe goes and records this heart melter of a ditty for Sesame Street.

"Dance Or Die" & "Faster" At Glastonbury 2011

Oh, what have we here? Janelle Monáe straight up crushing everything and everyone once again?

Yup. Yup yup yup yup yup.

Forever the Q.U.E.E.N.
