Janelle Monáe's Super Bowl Ad Is Epic

by Marc Cuenco

She's known for her unique style on and off the red carpet, but in a career-defining moment, Janelle Monáe channels Madonna in her Pepsi Super Bowl ad. The 30-year-old singer's debut ad for the Super Bowl finds her time-hopping through three decades in music: the '50s, the '80s, and today. For the 1980s' portion of the commercial, Monáe dresses up like the Queen of Pop in a "Like A Virgin" era outfit, complete with a lingerie-inspired dress, fingerless gloves, and tons of jewelry.

"[The commercial] is really paying homage to the past and the future," Monáe told People . "It's going through time and I'm so happy because I consider myself a time-traveler so this is right up my alley." The 30-year-old singer first appears in the ad in one of her signature tuxedo-style outfits while dancing to The Contours' classic "Do You Love Me" before kicking the door into a new decade: the '80s. Monáe then dances to "Express Yourself" in a Madonna-approved ensemble. The third and final part of the ad is a nod to Monáe's eclectic style, with a beaded crop top and pants, and her fabulous side braid.

The ad is not only a nod to the great music, artists, and styles that have shaped Monáe's own career, but it also pays tribute to memorable Pepsi commercials that have featured pop stars like Madonna, Britney Spears, and Beyoncé. Watch the Pepsi Super Bowl commercial below, starring Janelle Monáe:

Monáe certainly has Madge's style and dance moves down.

In her adorable tribute to the Queen of Pop, I couldn't help but compare the other times that Janelle Monáe and Madonna shared a similar aesthetic on the red carpet.

Monáe also found a way to make her own androgynous style, thanks to the path created by artists like Grace Jones and Madonna.

Meanwhile, Monáe often traded in her signature suits for a more lady-like look.
