Well, the new Jason Bourne movie is finally here. OK, well, it has yet to be released, but the Jason Bourne trailer was revealed during the 2016 Super Bowl on Sunday, which definitely pleases Matt Damon fans. Seeing as Damon wasn't in the last Bourne film, The Bourne Legacy starring Jeremy Renner, it's nice to see him back in action. The first footage from the anticipated movie offered up a lot of goodies, but why isn't Jeremy Renner in Jason Bourne ?
This time around, the film, also starring Alicia Vikander, Julia Stiles, Vincent Cassel, Joan Allen, and Tommy Lee Jones, among others, appears to be solely about Damon's big return to the beloved franchise, which is probably why Renner is MIA. It showed Damon ripped, badder, and ready for his time as a new and improved "weapon". I mean, when a film is titled after a character, it's clearly all about him and not someone else. Sorry, Renner!
So, if you're upset that Renner isn't part of Jason Bourne, don't get too upset, because it seems that he isn't 100 precent done with the Bourne franchise. As executive producer Frank Marshall told Collider in 2015 Renner will appear in future Bourne projects. It could come in the form of a standalone movie about Renner's character, Aaron Cross, or maybe a crossover with Cross and Bourne. "We don't have plans for that," Marshall said about whether Damon and Renner will join forces. "You never know. I never say never. But that's not the plan. They're on separate tracks."
There you have it. Maybe Super Bowl 51 will have a promo for a Bourne film featuring both Renner and Damon. I'm pretty sure that would put fans over the edge. But, as of right now, Cross and Bourne are two separate characters with two very different stories to tell.
Jason Bourne hits theaters summer 2016.
