Bad News, 'Gilmore Girls' Fans
The day is finally upon us. We've got the saddest news to hit Stars Hollow since Gilmore Girls was cancelled back in 2007. Melissa McCarthy won't be in the Gilmore Girls revival. In a tweet she posted Tuesday, McCarthy claims that "no one asked me or Sookie to come back to Stars Hollow." Say it ain't so!
Whether or not McCarthy would be returning to the show for the new season has been the talk of the fandom for a while now. After it was announced on Friday that six of the original cast members would be returning, the one notable name that was missing was McCarthy's. Of course, in the years since the show ended, the actor's star has been on the rise, and whether or not the revival would work with her schedule has been a concern since the minute it was announced.
Given that, McCarthy's tweet seems interestingly timed to me. Especially since it comes just one day after Sherman-Palladino spoke exclusively with TV Line about whether or not Sookie would be in the revival. Suggesting that it was an issue of scheduling and McCarthy being busy, Sherman-Palladino said, "Look, if Melissa is available and has an afternoon free, I’ll write her a scene."
Um, I don't work in Hollywood, but I'm pretty sure that's not how it works? Wouldn't Sherman-Palladino have written her a part from the get-go if she wanted her to be in it? I mean, maybe not. And who knows what really went down behind the scenes? There could be any number of explanations. I'm just hoping that McCarthy takes Sherman-Palladino up on her offer for a cameo, even if her tweet did seem kind of final. That "wish[ing] them all the best!!!" thing never bodes well for a surprise reunion.
So I think it's best if we all start the grieving process now. Maybe by the time the show premieres, we will have all moved through the various stages of grief and begun to accept a Sookie-less Stars Hollow.
