The Worst Hair and Makeup Looks in Grammys History (Shield Your Eyes!)

With the awards show season in full swing, it’s easy to get swept up in the glitz and glamour of the Golden Globes, SAG Awards, and other sophisticated red carpet appearances. While all of the beautiful, refined gowns are great, it’s a nice breath of fresh air when the Grammys roll around and things get a little wilder. And though there are plenty of worst dressed contenders at the other awards shows, too, the bad looks at the Grammys seem to go above and beyond the norm — and that doesn't stop with just the outfits. In preparation for both the good and bad styles we're bound to see at the 2014 Grammys on Sunday, travel back in time to check out the 10 worst hair and makeup looks to ever hit the Grammys red carpet.

Nicki Minaj

With all the crazy things she’s worn in the past, we really shouldn’t be surprised by Nicki Minaj’s wild antics anymore. But when she showed up to the 2011 Grammy Awards sporting a Bride of Frankenstein beehive, a leopard-print pixie, and bubblegum pink lips, we couldn’t help to be shocked — and not in a good way.

Pink

We didn’t think it was possible, but at the 2002 Grammys, Pink proved that there are some cat eyes that just don’t look flattering. In fact, this punk version looks downright terrible. (Unless she was going for raccoon chic, which — in that case — she totally pulled it off.)

Katy Perry

Raven locks may be her signature look, but Katy Perry took them to a bad, bad place at the 2010 Grammys when she tried to pull off this short, curled bangs look. (In case you were wondering, it didn’t work.)

Carly Rae Jepsen

Call me, maybe? After this flop of a hair and makeup look at the 2013 Grammys — complete with too-long bangs and a washed out face — Carly Rae Jepsen is probably the last person we would call for beauty advice.

Paula Abdul

We don’t know which was worse: the awful updo (hairpin included) or the bronzer disaster Paula Abdul endured at the 2009 Grammy Awards.

Kesha

Don’t get us wrong, she nailed the nude lip at the 2010 Grammys. But whatever’s going on with those eyes — perhaps a heavy-handed makeup artist and an accidental glitter explosion — needs to stop.

Bonnie McKee

We’re all for expressing your personality with a bold hair color, but a mix of fire-red and bleach-blonde locks and a wacky high, braided ponytail is just a recipe for disaster.

Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus doesn’t always make the best hair choices — bowl cut, anyone? — but we’d choose even the worst bleach-blonde pixie cut over this raggedy mess. And that awful spray tan doesn’t help matters, either.

Christina Aguilera

That face says it all. From the terrible black hair and flapper-inspired updo to the practically painted-on makeup, Christina Aguilera’s 2004 Grammys look was one of the worst we’ve ever seen on her — and that includes this disaster.

Courtney Love

Looking like a hot mess is nothing new for Courtney Love, but the stringy, untamed locks and over-the-top red lips weren’t helping her case at the 2004 Grammys.
