Rooney Mara's 2016 Oscars Outfit Will Be Awesome

Have you caught up with the buzzworthy Oscar nominations yet? As one of the notably female-driven contenders, Carol may have been a disappointing snub, but its two lead actresses, Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara both managed to snag nominations in the Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress categories, respectively. Now, Blanchett is something of a fashion legend (her Tiffany's statement necklace at last year's Oscars was certainly one for the ages), but her co-star Mara also tends towards interesting choices on the red carpet, ever since she first burst onto the scene alongside The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. So, what will Rooney Mara wear to the Academy Awards?

One thing you can say with certainty about Mara, is that she definitely has a quite distinct fashion M.O. She wears almost exclusively black, white, or nude (though a recent scarlet Dolce & Gabbana number made quite the impression) and she also tends towards lace and sheer layers, with the occasional ultra-modern architectural silhouette thrown in. The press tour for Carol might just act as a particularly prescient predictor for Oscar night — which makes me think she'll go for lacy Chanel or Alexander McQueen (Givenchy, Lanvin, and Giambattista Valli are also top contenders in my book). She might end up selecting something hot off the upcoming Couture Week runway, or something custom (which is often the case when it comes to the Oscars), but if she doesn't — here are some of her top options:

Chanel

Rooney Mara has been wearing a ton of Chanel lately, so there's definitely a possibility of some Karl Lagerfeld-designed duds in the cards.

Mara loves all things beige, all things ruffly, all things lacy, and all things sheer — so this Chanel Couture stunner might just be a slam dunk.

Alexander McQueen

Mara has already worn three pieces from the most recent Alexander McQueen collection over the past couple months... will lightning strike thrice?

Another red carpet favorite for Ms. Mara? Giambattista Valli.
