America's girl crush keeps racking up Oscar nominations. The delightfully goofy, self-deprecating, and insanely talented Jennifer Lawrence was nominated for Best Actress for the titular role in Joy and nominations in this category are becoming a well-deserved and nearly annual occurrence for J. Law. For those keeping score at home, she has earned three Best Actress noms and one Best Supporting Actress nom and she's just 25. With her new nomination, I am already wondering what she will wear to the 2016 Oscars, since she blew me away with her red, 2016 Golden Globes gown.
Based on her red carpet go-to brand and her past awards season ensembles, particularly at the Academy Awards, I have a pretty good idea of what to expect from Lawrence.
But despite the ability to make an educated guess as to what Lawrence will wear does not mean her style is predictable. She just has her sigs!
With all of that in mind, here's what I'm thinking.
Lawrence is a Dior spokesmodel and she often wears the brand at her film premieres, so there's that. Dior has also dressed her on the Oscar red carpet for the past several years because of that relationship. She will likely wear something by Dior Couture...
... Even though she has gone with other designers, like this sheer Schiaparelli Haute Couture dress, worn to a 2015 Hunger Games premiere.
Will she go with a slim, column silhouette, which she often favors? Or will she instead opt for something full, glamorous, and ball gown-like, as she did for her sole Oscar win? She could be superstitious and wear something similar to her "big win" year.
Let's look to past outfits for some clues to make a fully informed assessment.
1. 2011 Oscars
Lawrence wore this tomato red, Calvin Klein Collection slip dress to the 2011 Oscars when she was nominated for Winter's Bone. The dress was deceptively simple. The construction was no frills but that crimson color and the fact that it clung to all of her curves elevated it.
2. 2012 L.A. The Hunger Games Premiere
At the 2012 L.A. premiere of The Hunger Games, J. Law wore gold Prabal Gurung and it had a liquid metal effect. While this is further proof that she does step outside of her fabulous Dior box, it's also evidence of her love of that slinky silhouette.
3. 2013 Oscars
Lawrence wore a pale pink, strapless Dior Couture gown to the 2013 Academy Awards. This was the year she won her Best Actress Oscar, so she was the belle of the ball, even when she fell! The full skirt gave it a wedding dress vibe. But it was so feminine without being too fussy because J. Law ain't got time for that.
4. 2013 Golden Globes
You will notice that Lawrence has a thing for rich, ripe red. She often wears scarlet gowns at major Hollywood events. This was Dior, had a corset-like top, and was belted. The bottom flared out, giving it dual look. It was stunning.
5. 2014 Golden Globes
Lawrence's poufy white Dior gown with two black straps was pretty plain and not my favorite of her dresses. But it was fluffy and it was her go-to designer.
6. 2014 Oscars
Lawrence rocked skinny red column dress in 2014. Yes, it was by Dior and it sorted looked like a peplum cut. It wasn't as memorable as her CK dress. It was also restrictive, since she fell outside of the ceremony.
7. 2016 Golden Globes
This is one of J. Law's edgiest ensembles, thanks to the cut outs and the necklace. She loves red. She loves Dior. She loves a column shape. The pattern is real.
8. 2015 Joy Premiere
Her winter white Dior slip dress for the Joy premiere was silky and sexy.
9. 2015 London The Hunger Games Premiere
Lawrence showed some side boob in this black Dior dress in London. It had a unique shape but wasn't one we're used to seeing with her.
10. 2015 Madrid The Hunger Games Premiere
What, no Dior?! Lawrence's black dress, worn to the Madrid Hunger Games premiere last year, was by Ralph Lauren. It was super sexy, lacy, and glam, though!
11. 2014 SAG Awards
Her sequined and strapless Dior column dress at the 2014 SAGs really showed off her slender shape. It also shimmered when she sashayed in it.
Alright, there's a lot to process with these 11 ensembles. Lawrence has impeccable taste, with some colors and shapes being her obvious preference. She clearly loves the straight shape the best.
Taking all of her past looks into account, considering her preferences and her Dior contract, as well as the fact that she may want to step outside of her comfort zone, since that's where life begins, according to Hallmark!, I am going to make an educated guess here.
I think Lawrence will go with a Dior dress, in a column shape. She might switch it up little with a fishtail. She might go with winter white or basic black. I think she will opt out of red, because of her 2016 Golden Globes dress was crimson and her last Oscar gown, worn in 2014, was red. She skipped the 2015 ceremony.
So no on red, yes on Dior, yes on the column silhouette!
That said, here is my favorite of her recent red carpet looks and I wish she'd go with something that takes inspo from this.
Here are some Dior Couture 2016 runway options that could very well end up on J. Law on Oscar night!
This is a whimsical take on her favorite straight shape and has cut-outs, like her Globes frock.
Lawrence loves strapless, too.
This whisper pink hue reminds me of her 2013 "win" dress but in a more streamlined silhouette.
Good luck, Lady Law!
