It's a sad day for Harry Potter fans. On Thursday, it was announced that actor Alan Rickman died from cancer at the age of 69. What an unexpected and devastating loss. He will be remembered for his slew of phenomenal roles (Die Hard, Love Actually, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves), but Rickman will forever be honored for bringing Harry Potter 's Professor Snape to life. There's no other actor who could've brought justice to the misunderstood character like Rickman. I'm sure many Potterheads, like myself, are struggling to process the deeply sad news. So, maybe these Harry Potter quotes about loss will help ease the pain.
If there is a book franchise that's dealt with death on more than one occasion, it's HP. So many fan-favorite (and not so beloved) characters said goodbye throughout the seven years of Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley's time at Hogwarts. Of course, J.K. Rowling always found the right words to discuss loss and how it makes someone feel, all while putting death into perspective.
So, let's look to Rowling, once again, when it comes to death. If anyone can help Harry Potter fans during this difficult time of Rickman's passing, it's the author's beautiful words.
1. "To have been loved so deeply, even though the person who loved us is gone, will give us some protection forever."
— Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
2. "Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light."
— Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
3. "It's cruel that I got to spend so much time with James and Lily, and you so little. But know this; the ones that love us never really leave us."
— Sirius Black, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
4. "You think the dead we loved ever truly leave us? You think that we don’t recall them more clearly than ever in times of great trouble? Your father is alive in you, Harry, and shows himself plainly when you have need of him."
— Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
5. "Numbing the pain for a while will make it worse when you finally feel it."
— Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
6. "It is the unknown we fear when we look upon death and darkness, nothing more."
— Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
7. "Do not pity the dead, Harry. Pity the living, and, above all those who live without love."
— Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
8. "Always."
— Severus Snape, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
