When Fifty Shades of Grey came out during Valentine's Day weekend in 2015, fans of the books from E.L. James and those who wanted to watch some steamy sex scenes between Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan headed to theaters in droves. Even if you didn't care for the film, there's a chance you were still a fan of the soundtrack. There's no doubt the soundtrack included some top artists, but there was one song that caught everyones eye and ears: The Weeknd's "Earned It". So, now that the 2016 Oscar nominations are here, what does that mean for the hit song? Fifty Shades of Grey now has an Oscar nomination thanks to The Weeknd's "Earned It"
Did you ever think you'd say, "Fifty Shades of Grey is nominated for an Oscar?" Yeah, neither did I. That said, it's not like it's sitting pretty in the Best Picture category. It does, however, have the chance to take home a gold statue for Best Original Song. Basically, Johnson, Dornan, and everyone involved in the movie should bow down and thank The Weeknd for even getting them an Oscar nom. He and his music are the real winners of the film that brought tons of viewers to the box office, but was far from critically acclaimed.
I mean, Fifty Shades earned itself a 2016 Razzie nomination, so this is like its saving grace — kind of. Now, all fans of The Weeknd have to do is wait and see if his song wins.
