Gabourey Sidibe Is A Twerking Babe

by Marie Southard Ospina

Every time the Golden Globes come around, I know to expect wonders from Empire actress Gabourey Sidibe. And Gabourey Sidibe at the 2016 Golden Globes didn't disappoint. Or, well, Gabourey Sidibe getting ready for FOX's Golden Globes party, anyway. Back in 2014, Sidibe charmed many of us when she tackled fat shaming Internet trolls without shame, telling them, "To people making mean comments about my GG pics, I mos def cried about it on that private jet on my way to my dream job last night. #JK." Clearly, humor and sass are the best antidote to the fools of the Twitter-verse. And this year, well, she's twerking in a Christian Siriano gown that is all kinds of sparkling and all kinds of queenly.

To me, Sidibe has always seemed to give zero f*cks about what anyone has to say about her. The reality is that we live in a society that perpetuates body negativity with as much fervor as it perpetuates judgmental red carpet atmospheres. The 32-year-old actress has always seemed comfortable in herself, though — in her body, in her talent. And when you consider all the BS plus size women are conditioned to feel about their image, well, it's nothing short of inspirational. And tonight — in one fell swoop of a tweet — Sidibe has reminded us that plus size babes can twerk just as well (and just as fine) as anyone else.

Seriously, how cute is she? I had thought that there was no way I could love Sidibe more after that monumental and history-making sex scene on Empire (you know, the one where she gets it on with a traditionally attractive dude, and no mention is made of her body or of the situation being somehow "wrong," because, obviously, it wasn't), but I was so, so wrong. As Sidibe shakes it in this video, it's clear she is the queen of my fat girl soul. Here's hoping she brings on all the twerks, all the time from here on out. Because, ICYMI, us fat babes can do anything we so please. Thank you, Gabourey Sidibe, for reminding the rest of the world of this simple truth.
