The 2016 Golden Globes Were All About The '90s
It seems that nostalgia for the '90s is entirely in vogue these days. And whether it was consciously constructed or part of the mysterious way fashion collectively ebbs and flows, the 2016 Golden Globes red carpet had some decidedly '90s fashion undertones to it. Between cropped bandeau top and skirt combos, a variety of velvet, spaghetti straps, brown lipstick, and some semi-throwback hairstyles, things were feeling a bit late 20th century, in a very delightful way.
That's right: For those of us who are '90s kids, this year's Golden Globes were an absolute fashion flashback win. We got to see our favorite talented celebs all decked out in (hopefully intentional) tributes to the absolute most slammin' decade. And while the nuances were somewhat subtle, it's a fairly exciting notion that '90s style could be back in this year once again. That's right, bust out your tube tops, halters, and over the top colorful makeup (not to mention the scrunchies, oversized sweaters, boyfriend jeans, and little black chokers). If Hollywood's best and brightest are any indication of blossoming trends, we could be in for an exciting year of '90s fashion classics in the wardrobe department. In the meantime, enjoy these highlights from the red carpet.
1. Very Velvet
Dwayne Johnson made this purple velvet suit coat look all sorts of smooth, and paid a little hat tip to the '90s velvet trend.
Of course, Lady Gaga's incredible velvet gown stole the show (or rather, the carpet) as well.
2. Beautiful Bandeau
If Kate Hudson's soft pink bandeau and skirt combo plus choker don't hail back to the '90s, I simply don't know what does.
3. Spaghetti Strap Throwbacks
Somewhere between adorable and sultry falls Katy Perry's pretty in pink spaghetti strap gown.
And the stunning, champagne gown that Rosie Huntington-Whiteley wore definitely hits the '90s mark in a very classy way.
4. The Humble Return Of The Halter
Talk about a knockout gown. Brie Larson's golden halter top gown is simply gorgeous, and halters hail back to '90s fashion like no other.
And Kate Winslet's lovely gown is both classy and rather reminiscent of the quintessential halter.
5. Throwback Hair
Can anyone say flashback? Brad Pitt's hair looked a bit like it did when he starred in Meet Joe Black back in 1998. And that, my friends, is a beautiful thing.
6. Bold Makeup
Laverne Cox rocked some beautiful dark lips — a classic '90s grunge look, that she made look absolutely glam.
Rooney Mara's lips were a berry/brown blend, and very reminiscent of the '90s.
And, of course, Zendaya's luscious look fell into the same dark, bold category.
As you can see, Hollywood had a rather nostalgic bend on the 2016 Golden Globe red carpet, and the results were rather wonderful.
