Non Poses A Major Threat On 'Supergirl'
In comparison to other television series, the winter hiatus for Supergirl may have been short, but I'm still so glad to be back with Kara Danvers — especially since the winter finale ended on such a cliffhanger! Remember, the DEO had captured Kara's possibly evil Aunt Astra, leading to her husband, Non, attacking Maxwell Lord at his company and forcing Alex Danvers, her fellow DEO agents, and Supergirl to come to his rescue. So, who is Non in DC Comics and how does he fit into Supergirl?
Non is most well known as a brutish villain for Kara's cousin, Clark Kent — y'know, Superman — but his history in the DC Comics is much more complex than that. Non started out as a Kryptonian scientist, one who discovered Krypton's sun had become unstable and would eventually wipe out the entire planet. However, when he went to the Science Council, they scoffed at his findings, accused him of illegal heresy, and ordered him not to cause a global panic by telling everyone about what he had learned. Of course, Non couldn't ignore the imminent destruction of Krypton and went against the Council's orders. As a result, the Kryptonian Science Council apprehended Non and lobotomized him, turning him into the mute, brute villain Superman fans will recognize.
That's an interesting story, but how does it relate to Supergirl? It seems likely from everything we know about Astra's history — that she was imprisoned by Kara's mother Alura for "speaking the truth" about the destruction of Krypton — Non's storyline will follow very closely to his comic book counterpart. On Supergirl, both Non and Astra were involved in the movement to warn Kryptonians about their planet's destruction and, as a result, were imprisoned in the Phantom Zone, before eventually crashing to Earth. Plus, we also know that Non is slightly more violent than Astra, since he thinks Kara should either be converted to their cause or killed. Yikes.
According to the synopsis of this week's episode, "Blood Bonds," Non will capture DEO director Hank Henshaw/in-disguise Martian Manhunter J'onn J'onzz and interrogate him:
With Astra in captivity at the DEO, her husband, Non (Chris Vance), captures Hank, leading to a tense standoff between the two sides. Also, Kara continues to refute Cat’s allegations that she is Supergirl.
Plus, a clip from the episode further teases Non's interrogation of Hank, though it looks like the Martian has the upper hand in this case.
With all this information put together, it seems like Non is the biggest threat we've seen to Supergirl and the DEO yet. He's more fanatical and violent than Astra, and since the DEO has his wife imprisoned in their facility, he may turn to desperate measures in order to ensure her safe return. Plus, with his Kryptonian powers similar to those of Supergirl, and his technology to deflect the effects of Kryptonite, it's easy to see how this fight is evenly matched. Maybe J'onn J'onzz will have to step in and give the good guys an edge in their fight against Non.
