Is there anything that Beyoncé can't do? From singing to dancing, she's a superstar in every sense of the word. On top of that, she parents Blue Ivy and crusades for equal rights. And now, from the sound of it, 2016 may be her busiest year yet. According to The Sun, Beyoncé is writing and starring in a movie in an attempt to win an Oscar, because she reportedly wants to be taken seriously as an actress. Claims The Sun:
The superstar has hired a team of acting coaches and writers to put together a movie about Saartjie Baartman — who was exhibited in London freak shows during the 1800s, owing to her very large derrière.
Baartman's life story is a tragic one: She was born in Cape Town, South Africa and worked as a slave before being taken to London, where she appeared in freak show exhibits under the name Hottentot Venus. For a majority of her life, she was put on display and exploited because of her body shape. Considering Bey is an outspoken feminist, I'd imagine that she'd do Baartman's story justice, however heartbreaking it may be.
Bustle has reached out to Beyonce's rep for comment about the report, but hasn't heard back at this time. If this movie news is true, though, it would be a major role for Beyoncé, who hasn't appeared in a film since 2009. (Unless, of course, you count her On The Run HBO special, which earned her and Jay Z a Grammy nomination for Best Music Film.) Since it's been awhile since Queen B took on the silver screen, here's a round-up of Bey's previous roles. It's a perfect way to reminisce about the "Single Ladies" singer's many talents.
1. Austin Powers In Goldmember
In 2002, Beyoncé played Foxxy Cleopatra in this Austin Powers movie.
2. Carmen: A Hip Hopera
Bey played the lead in this made-for-TV remake of the classic story of Carmen in 2001.
3. Obsessed
In this 2009 thriller, Beyoncé played Idris Elba's wife.
4. Dreamgirls
She played Deena Jones in 2006's award-winning musical Dreamgirls.
5. The Pink Panther
Let's not forget another movie that Bey appeared in that year — The Pink Panther. She played Xania in the Steve Martin comedy.
Fingers crossed that this movie news is true. It's been far too long since Beyoncé was on the big screen.
