How Did Jeremy Carter Die?
Jimmy Carter delivered tragic news during his Sunday School class at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia, over the weekend. Carter's 28-year-old grandson, Jeremy, died suddenly on Saturday. The former president recalled fond memories of his grandson, who was looking to transfer universities to be closer to home. But how did Jeremy Carter die?
A cause of death has yet to be named and the circumstances surrounding Jeremy's death are currently being investigated. Jeremy's brother, Jason, wrote an emotional blog post about Jeremy's death. Between reminiscing and trying to get through the holidays while faced with immense grief, Jason detailed what he saw when he rushed to the hospital after receiving a call from his dad that Jeremy wasn't doing well:
He had a heart attack at home while alone in the kitchen with our mom, my dear mother had to give him CPR until the paramedics came, and they took him to the ER ... Jeremy's heart stopped a second time ... After 10 minutes of trying, they said they would continue, but he would likely be severely brain damaged. We told them to stop. They did. He died at 2:00 AM on Dec. 20, 2015. He was only 28 years old.
According to Jason, Jeremy had recently faced mysterious health problems that robbed him of his appetite and caused pain to his legs. Jason didn't name a specific diagnosis, though he said that doctors had prescribed Vitamin A and Vitamin D after running copious tests on him.
Tributes are popping up across the web for Jimmy's grandson. As of this writing, a Legacy.com obituary guestbook has seen 161 letters of condolence. Jason's wife, Sarah, penned a tribute to Jeremy on her husband's blog. She recalled that Jeremy was a fantastic uncle who was incredibly reliable and had a great sense of humor:
Jeremy loved being an uncle. He was so nervous the first time he held Charlie in the hospital but did a good job and was so sweet. The smile never left his face that day. ... I just can't believe this is real. I can't believe you are gone, Jeremy. You had plans. New goals. New adventures ahead of you. You were just getting started.
Information on funeral arrangements have yet to be released. Jeremy's obituary describes the 28-year-old as looking up to his humanitarian grandfather, thus a touching way to honor his memory would be to donate to the Carter Foundation in Jeremy's name.
