It's no secret that the '90s are back in a big way — spaghetti straps, brown lipsticks, and chunky heels are becoming ubiquitous on stylish celebrities and fashion bloggers alike. Enter Rihanna in a red velvet slip dress. The singer incorporated her edgy personal style with the vintage Jean Paul Gaultier piece through an oversized hair bow, round frame sunglasses, plum lipstick, and a bulky fur-lined leather coat that contrasted with flowing lines of the dress. The result was a trendy combination of old and new fashion trends that is all-too easy to recreate.

Rihanna isn't the first celeb to sport a slip dress this year — stars such as Anne Hathaway and Jennifer Lawrence have also hopped aboard the trend. True, there were some trends in the '90s that are better left in memory (slap bracelets or patterned windbreakers, anybody?), but the slip dress is a versatile piece that can look totally now. Layer it with a sweater and tights for a contemporary look, or eschew modern trappings and embrace Jennifer Aniston ca. 1997 by pairing the dress with a pair of chunky heels and nothing else.
