Holy technological breakthrough, Batman! Now that these Netflix socks that can pause your show for you exist, we've pretty much achieved the peak of humankind. Netflix and Maker Media teamed up to create this cozy wearable tech, which has the ability to detect when you have fallen asleep to the lullaby that is your Netflix binge, and automatically hit pause on the program for you. That way when you wake up in the morning for more binge-watching (hellloooooo, Saturday), you pick up right where you left off.
If you want to rock a pair of these socks, though, you have to earn them — the glory of the Netflix sock is that it is built entirely from scratch by the user. Netflix has an incredibly thorough how-to on their site that guides you through the entire process, from knitting your own sock to creating the tech to programming it to respond to signals. And trust me, fellow non-knitters, you're going to want to learn how when you see the patterns for the socks. They come in varieties for all of your favorite Netflix Originals — and as a Kimmy Schmidt fangirl, I personally can't imagine any scenario that it wouldn't be socially appropriate to wear have the words "Pinot Noir" emblazoned on my lower calf.
Another top contender, of course, is Jessica Jones, which I am halfway through binge-watching at the peril of many potential Twitter spoilers. (Pray for me.)
The socks use an accelerometer, a sensitive device that can tell the difference between when you're moving around and when you're laying still — and, more importantly, the difference between when you're laying still and when you've conked out for the night.
You can then set up an IR signal from the sock to your device, indicating the method you want to use to pause the program, the threshold for when it will count you as "asleep," and how long you want it to take to hit pause. Basically, if you make yourself a pair of Netflix socks, you are queen of your own universe. If all goes well, it'll work like this:
Ta-daaaaa! Between this and the Netflix and Chill button, we are basically unstoppable as a species. To learn more about the process of making your own Netflix socks, visit their how-to site, and check out the video showing how they work below:
