Fans hoping to get Rebekah Mikaelson back for good after Elijah and Klaus retrieved her body from the bottom of the ocean on The Originals were left disappointed by the show's mid-season finale. In "Savior," Elijah recovered Rebekah and un-staked her just in time for Christmas, only to discover that the magical stake used to subdue Rebekah was cursed. Once it was removed from her body, Rebekah was marked for death — she literally woke up with a skull mark on her arm. As the mark deepened, Rebekah slowly went mad, attacking Hayley and laying truth bombs on Klaus before Freya could gather enough magic to cure her. Unfortunately, the cure was only temporary, and Rebekah ended up begging Elijah to stake her, fulfilling the prophecy. So, with a stake through her heart, is Rebekah really dead on The Originals ?
The simple answer is no — Rebekah Mikaelson is an Original after all, and, as we all know, it's not easy to kill an Original. So, being staked in the heart isn't what makes Rebekah's fate so perplexing, it's the curse. Even if Rebekah isn't truly dead, the second that stake comes out of her body, she'll descend into madness again. And, if her siblings find that there is no cure for her curse, then Rebekah will die.
So, things don't look good for Rebekah, and they look even worse for Elijah, who had the unfortunate task of stabbing his own sister in the heart, thus fulfilling the prophecy that stated that one of them would fall by family. Rebekah told Elijah that maybe they should embrace the prophecy, and that he could wake her up once the year is passed and the prophecy no longer applies, but there's no way it can be that easy. The prophecy said that all three Mikaelsons, Rebekah, Elijah and Klaus, would fall: "One by friend, one by foe, and one by family." And it seems like the siblings believe that, with Rebekah staked by Elijah, the entire prophecy has been fulfilled.
There's only one problem with that: Klaus hasn't been taken down yet. Freya specifically said that all three of the Mikaelsons would be taken down, which makes me think that this isn't the last we've seen of the prophecy. And, we won't find out until The Originals returns on Friday, Jan. 29, so let the wait for new episodes begin.
