Something's Wrong With Caroline On 'TVD'

by Kelly Schremph

Considering the fact that I have yet to be a parent, I can't pretend to know exactly what pregnancy is like. I mean, I have a general idea of the concept (growing belly, weird food cravings, etc.), but this is really something you have to experience firsthand in order to fully get what this whole "miracle of life" thing is all about. However, I think we can all agree that Caroline's pregnancy on The Vampire Diaries is delving into brand new (and potentially very dangerous) territory. While we knew that a vampire pregnancy would undoubtedly come with some TVD-like consequences, we were unaware of the full extent of the matter.

It all started when Caroline and Alaric attended a birthing class together. (Two words I never thought I'd say, by the way.) After the session was over, Caroline heard some of their other classmates whispering about them. (Her vamp hearing senses are apparently more heightened then ever, but I feel like she should've been able to hear them anyway, regardless of her pregnancy?) Anyway, she didn't like what she was hearing and in a very non-Caroline-like fashion, she moved in to attack them with her crazy vampire eyes on full display. Luckily, Alaric was there to snap her out of it, but it was enough to make us all take notice.

But the confusing behavior didn't end there. Later on that very same day, she began stressing about the pregnancy since they have absolutely zero studies on vampire pregnancies to study up on. And when Alaric tried to make her feel better, she nearly attacked him as well. She caught herself before anything bad happened, thankfully, but it makes you wonder if it's only a matter of time before she loses complete control of her senses. The idea of a vampire pregnancy is so foreign it's hard to really know what to expect, especially considering that she's carrying two very magical Gemini twins. I mean, think about it — two mini-witches are taking up residents inside of a vampire body. That's a deadly combination if I've ever heard one.

Right now it's unclear what's making Caroline lose control of her inhibitions like this. Maybe the twins are draining so much of her energy that she's having a difficult time harnessing any self restraint. Or perhaps they're siphoning away her patience or the blood that she drinks, making her more agitated and hungry than she's ever been before? Either way, it's not great news. And while, yes, we know that things work out in the end (due to those handy flash forwards), I can't help but wonder if this is going to produce a snowball effect somewhere down the line.

Then again, maybe she's just really stressed and misses her mom. (That graveyard scene, you guys. Heartbreaking stuff.) I suppose only time will tell for sure.
