These Fashion Trends Are Poised To Explode In 2016

by Kelly Dougher

With Jan. 1 fast approaching, 'tis the season to reminisce on the 365 days that will soon be behind us — and make predictions for the pieces that will be taking over our closets in the 365 to come. The year 2015 saw its share of supremely stylish fashion trends as well as some pretty dicey ones. A few trends died out fairly quickly (see ya never, crazy fluff-ball shoes), whereas others are still going strong (suede skirt, anyone?). But there are a few micro-trends that were newcomers or simply flew somewhat under the radar this year — and their moment is quickly approaching.

Thanks to bloggers, celebrities, and some of our favorite retailers, we've noticed certain trends in denim, hats, shoes, outerwear and more that keep reoccurring more and more lately. You may have started to see them in magazine editorials or on extra hip bloggers in 2015, but come 2016 you can basically count on these 10 fashion trends to blow up all over your Instagram and Pinterest feeds, so be sure to snap up your favorites now. That way you can say you were ahead of the crowd. From mom jeans to skinny neck scarves to berets that will make your Francophilian heart sing, take a peek at the trends we'll all be wearing next year.

1. Mom Jeans

High Rise Tapered Jeans, $50, zara.com

Yep, mom jeans are definitely back. This is a good thing, though. The modern version of this trend is updated just enough to be cool. Basically it just means you'll have a higher waist (which is perfect for pairing with crop tops) and a relaxed fit through your legs (meaning, no more struggling to pull on skinny jeans).

2. Extreme Fringe

Plus Size Tasseled Cami Halter Top, $28, forever21.com

Fringe was a huge trend in 2015, but it's only going to pick up speed in 2016. In the new year, fringe is going to literally take over your clothes in a big way. So don't be shy: Pick a top, dress, or jacket with seriously statement-making fringe.

3. Laced-Up Bosoms

Plus Size Lace-Up Mini Dress, $25, forever21.com

Sorry for the word "bosoms," first of all. Second of all, this is going to be the sexiest trend of 2016. First it was lace-up shoes, now it's all about translating that trend to tops and dresses. This is the trend that you'll want to reach for whenever you go out to party in 2016.

4. Duster Coats

ASOS Curve Funnel Neck Coat, $171, asos.com

Oversized, masculine coats are everywhere right now and they're only going to become more popular as the months get chillier. Put aside your maxi dress till spring and invest in a good maxi coat instead. They can be a little bulky and overwhelming, so pair them with skinny jeans and high heels. Tall girls will look especially cool in these coats.

Long Handmade Studio Coat, $200, zara.com

5. Skinny Neck Scarves

Satin Skinny Tie Scarf, $19, urbanoutfitters.com

Whether as a stand-alone accessory or as part of a top or dress, these skinny neck ties are about to become the No. 1 must-have accessory in 2016. A satin one in basic black will go with everything, but a patterned one is fun too. Have fun with tying it in different ways and pairing it with everything from collared tops to strappy dresses.

Strappy Top With Neck Tie, $40, zara.com

6. Wide-Legged Culottes

Silence + Noise Soft Pleated Culotte Pant, $69, urbanoutfitters.com

When culottes first arrived on the scene, everyone groaned in unison. Now, however, they seem to be catching on in a big way. Get a pair of flowing, wide-legged culottes that end somewhere below the knee and above the ankle for a more interesting look than just a regular skirt.

Cropped Jacquard Trousers, $30, zara.com

7. Statement Sneakers

Keds x kate spade new york Champion Glitter, $80, keds.com

Statement heels are a thing of the past. Now everyone needs at least one pair of statement sneakers in their closet. Whether for hanging out on the weekend or adding a casual touch to a party dress, statement sneakers are fun, versatile, and (best of all) comfortable.

adidas Originals Superstar 80s Gold Metallic Trainers, $112, asos.com

Puma Solange Trinomic XT2 Trainer, $180, nastygal.com

8. Baseball Caps

Curdoury Baseball Hat, $24, urbanoutfitters.com

You need to get yourself a baseball cap in 2016. Wear it with everything from cute little floral dresses to boyfriend jeans and a tee. The classic baseball cap gives a great casual, downtown air to any outfit. (Pro tip: Urban Outfitters is a particularly good place to find a wide range of baseball hats.)

9. Berets

Gia Structured Beret, $39, urbanoutfitters.com

If boyish charm isn't your thing, how about some French je ne sais quoi instead? Berets haven't enjoyed widespread popularity in a while, but they're poised to make a comeback. Think how cute it'll look with mini skirts and trench coats this winter and spring.

Clemence Wool Beret, $38, nastygal.com

Felt Wool-Blend Beret, $10, forever21.com

10. Tie-Front Dresses

ASOS Midi Dress in Knit With Tie Detail, $63, asos.com

This is kind of a weird one, but it's a burgeoning trend nevertheless. Wrap dresses and dresses that tie in the front aren't new, but this newest version involves wide ties that start at the sides and wrap together in the front of the dress. It's a little odd to get used to, since it's not a belt (leaving us with the question: what exactly is it??) but it's pretty handy for making a dress look chic in a flash.

While there are likely loads more unexpected trends that will pop up come 2016, these are the definites to fill your closet with ASAP.
