Who Should Star With Abigail in 'Dirty Dancing'?
Whether you were begging for this as loudly as I was or not, ABC has just announced that a three-hour television reboot of Dirty Dancing , is on it's way. And Little Miss Sunshine's Abigail Breslin is all grown up and getting ready to take on Jennifer Grey's famed role of Baby. But now we all have one question one our minds: Who could possibly replace Patrick Swayze? Obviously, no one can necessarily replace him, but they do need to cast an actor who can perform that famous lift with Breslin. They still need to cast a Johnny.
So, first, let's look at the very essence of this casting decision: Who is Johnny? Well, he's unbelievably handsome (Hello! We're talking about Patrick Swayze in his prime), an incredible dancer, and, basically, someone who can make every girl swoon with just the subtlety of a half-smile. Now, while I personally think it would be amazing for ABC to breakout some brand-new, never-before-seen talent for a role as coveted as this one, chances are they will end up going with someone who is more well-known. So, now, it's time to narrow down the list of well-knowns (hopefully with great dance moves), and see which one might pair up best with Abigail. Here are some of my top picks.
1. Miles Teller
OK, so this rising star seems more age-appropriate for Abigail Breslin. And he also happens to be a secretly great dancer! Remember when he starred in another '80s classic remake, Footloose? Yeah, he's a definite yes for the role in my eyes.
2. Michael B. Jordan
This Creed actor is definitely on the rise. And he showed us he will seriously work out and get himself in shape for a role the way he did for the Rocky sequel. So, honestly, I think it'd be really interesting to see him bust a move on the dance floor.
3. Zac Efron
Now this original musical star may have turned down Kevin Bacon's character in the remake of Footloose, but maybe this television special could be just the thing to get him back on his feet and dancing? My only concern for this one would be how he might fair against Abigail Breslin.
4. Jaden Smith
OK, now Jaden Smith has proved to us on Ellen that he has the dance skills to pull this role off. But is he ready to transition from teen actor to romance-based roles? And what would Will and Jada Pinkett Smith think of that? Smith has already held his own in an '80s remake with the film, The Karate Kid. Maybe this could be his next break.
5. Ansel Elgort
This is someone that I would believe to be a perfect choice. We were first introduced to the impeccable charm of this actor in John Green's The Fault in Our Stars — so we know we can do that part. He also happens to be in the perfect age bracket for Abigail. And... he can dance! He actually can tap dance, and seriously get his groove on. Too good to be true, right?
6. Avan Jogia
You may know this actor from his roles in Nickelodeon's Victorious and ABC Family's Twisted, but I think this could be just the role for him to breakout of that teen image and come into his own. And, of course, being on Victorious has proven that he's got some moves of his own.
7. Nick Jonas
Abigail stars alongside this former Jonas Brother on the ABC hit-show Scream Queens, so we know they're both in the same age bracket and have affiliations with the network. "Sexy" is also basically Jonas' overall brand. From underwear photo shoots to scandalous scenes, Johnny would be pretty similar to the "Jealous" singer.
8. Taylor Lautner
Remember this Twilight hunk? Well, it's been a while since we've seen him in a meaty role, and I think, if he put his dance moves to good use, he might just make a phenomenal Johnny! Plus, he'd also make pretty good looking couple with Abigail Breslin.
9. Channing Tatum
Remember when Channing came dancing into our hearts in Step Up? Well, that role is exactly what makes me believe he's cut out to play Johnny. However, he does seem a little too old for the already-cast Baby. Then again, this is Hollywood. You never know.
So, who will reprise Patrick Swayze's infamous role? We'll just have to wait and see.
