Shailene's 'Divergent' Commentary Is On Point
Divergent starring Shailene Woodley, Theo James, and Kate Winslet is set to premiere on March 21st and we can hardly wait. To further our desire to see Tris in action on the silver screen, Woodley revealed that Divergent appeals to people not only as a novel, but as a movie, too. She contends that the attraction to this story lies in its treatment of the target audience. She explains that, "It’s not just about young people figuring their way through life. It’s about young people being in really adult situations, and they’re treated like adults, which is how adolescents are these days. Everybody’s incredibly smart, and there’s not a lot of movies that do that age range justice."
We tend to agree with the 22-year-old starlet in her hypothesis — the world in recent times has become a much more real and far less innocent place. But there are also so many other reasons why we're excited to see Divergent come to life on the screen.
1. We love to see a girl take charge unapologetically
Tris Prior has all of the internal strife as Bella Swan with being an insecure sixteen year old girl but doesn't spend the majority of her time weeping over her boyfriend. Tris' anxieties are met with her unbridled ambition and need to better herself, ala Katniss Everdeen. This heroine is unique because she feels just a little more human than Everdeen and a lot more independent than Swan. No doubt, Woodley, who gained critical acclaim for her role in The Descendants, will play to Tris' flaws and strengths with ease.
2. Theo James
Mhm hm. This is the tan and taught 29 year-old British actor's first big movie role and we have high hopes for his performance. Not only is he a perfect fit as Four physically, but we can already see the chemistry between him and Woodley seeping through the stills that have been released. Besides, it will be nice to see Downton Abbey's ill-fated Mr. Pamuk come back to life once more.
3. Chicago transformed
The dystopian world of Divergent takes place in a post-apocalyptic Chicago which boasts rows of identically square gray houses, abandoned buildings, rundown amusement parks, and oh yeah, cavernous lairs. It'll be eerily interesting to see how the makers of Divergent are going to reconstruct the famous landmarks and destroy the beloved city.
4. ALL OF THE STUNTS!
The Dauntless are just so unabashedly cool with their tattoos, piercings, ass-kicking, height jumping, and runaway train catching. Come on, at one point or another, we've all wanted to be Dauntless and to see what it is to live without fear.
