Round Faces, These Are the Hairstyles for You
The best tool for determining which hairstyle will look best on you is so basic that lots of people overlook it: Determine how your face is shaped. Experts shared their tips on how to pick a hairstyle that's going to complement your natural face structure so you can look your absolute best.
HOW TO FIGURE OUT YOUR FACE SHAPE
This is easy-peasy. Take an old lipstick and trace around the outline of your face (excluding your ears). Look in the mirror. If you see a circle with the only discerning point being a slightly tapered chin, you have a round face. Think Lily Cole, Ginnifer Goodwin and Kirsten Dunst. You're in good company.
THE BEST CUTS FOR A ROUND FACE
Long
"The round face can really work with any length, including long hair, but the straight blunt cut doesn't work," says celeb stylist Billy Lowe. "Soft layers are key to even out the face shape and a wavy texture will always suit more than pin straight."
Medium
“Round faces suit side swept bangs with mid length layered hair,” says hairstylist Angelo David Pisacreta. For an elegant updo, Pisacreta suggests trying sweeping bangs for a flattering effect.
Lowe recommends styling shoulder length hair slightly off the face – taking the top layer and backcombing to add height and volume for added dimension.
Short
Generally, a 'choppy' cut works better for your face type. Avoid the perfectly cut bob look, which gives the effect of looking much more circular. Since round faces often come with fuller cheeks, the piecey, textured hair or a side swept look can minimize the fullness.
A NOTE ABOUT COLOR
“Dimensional color is also great for this,” says Lowe. “Avoid single-process color and create dimension, detail, and contrast with varying tones.”
