This 'A.M.' Song Is 1D's Goodbye Message To Fans
The tissue company might experience a shortage worldwide on Friday as Directioners listen to One Direction's latest album Made In The A.M. — aka the final album that the band will be putting out before they go on hiatus for who-knows-how-long. While the boys have promised that they will come back from their hiatus after they have time to chill and come to terms with the fact that they lost a member during their last tour, fans are in an emotional state. Not just because of that, but also because so many of the tracks on the album stand out as songs that are, in part, about the band saying goodbye. However, there's one track in particular that stands out above the rest. One Direction's "If I Could Fly" lyrics are the perfect goodbye message to fans, with a hopeful note that might just help Directioners get through this hiatus with their hearts in tact.
Of course, "If I Could Fly" is in good company with other hits like "I Want To Write You A Song," "Walking In The Wind," and, in part, "Love You Goodbye," all of which have lines that could be the band talking directly to fans about how hard it is to be leaving, how much they want to comfort the fans, and, of course, that they'll be back soon. But "If I Could Fly" goes above and beyond all that, revealing vulnerabilities and a deep love that every fan will feel as they listen. Just check out the first verse.
If I could fly, I'd be coming right back home to youI think I might give up everything, just ask me toPay attention, I hope that you listen cause I let my guard downRight now I'm completely defenseless
The band is basically opening up with this verse. The first line makes it seem like "if I could fly" is some kind of symbolism for "if we could get through this without going on hiatus," a promise that the last thing they want to do is leave.
Then it gets worse, with the chorus.
For your eyes only, I show you my heartFor when you're lonely and forget who you areI'm missing half of me when we're apartNow you know me, for your eyes onlyFor your eyes only
You're missing half of your heart, One Direction? YOU'RE missing half of your heart? My heart is on the ground being stomped on because of this song. And they're showing their fans their heart with this song in case they get lonely during the hiatus? Someone please hold me right now.
Correction: someone please hold the whole fandom right now. And, yet, still, the song gets worse. Or better, depending on your feelings about crying in the shower.
I've got scars, even though they can't always be seenAnd pain gets hard, but now you're here and I don't feel a thingPay attention, I hope that you listen cause I let my guard downRight now I'm completely defenseless
Are they perhaps referencing the pain of losing Zayn Malik right now? And how it went away for a little bit when they were being buoyed by the love of their fans? I'm not crying, you're crying.
And then the band returns one more time with the final bridge to cut your soul in two.
I can feel your heart inside of mineI feel itI've been going out of my mindI feel itKnow that I'm just wasting timeAnd I hope that you don't run from me
Yeah, somehow, I don't think that they need to worry about that. Honestly, as far as goodbye songs go, this has everything I could ever want. It's a personal message to the fans that have stuck by them and gotten to know them through the years, "for [their] eyes only," and it shows the boys being simplistic, acoustic, and distressingly real. Whether you've been ride or die since the X Factor days, or are a new fan with this album, this song will make you cry to know that it's over for these guys, even temporarily. Maybe they'll fly back to us one day. Maybe they won't. But, whether they do or not, this song will stand out among the others as the one that makes you cry in your bedroom at night because it's the end of an era.
