Is Space-Themed Apparel The Next Big Trend?

by Rosie Narasaki

There’s definitely a reason we all had glow in the dark stars pasted all over our ceilings: space is cool, man. That inherent coolness (not to mention aesthetically-pleasing-ness) happens to extend to fashion as well — especially since space-themed couture has really been making the rounds over the past few fashion weeks. I think we can all pretty much agree that everything space is awesome — I mean, constellations? Planets? Nebulas? Galaxies? It’s all pretty tough to beat.

Perhaps most notably, Valentino and Zuhair Murad made major splashes with the trend. First, there was the Valentino Pre-Fall 2015 collection, which featured everything from planet-embroidered knee-high boots to constellation-emblazoned wool capes — and more recently, Zuhair Murad's Fall Couture collection took space and made it downright heavenly, with voluminous galactic ball gowns, celestial tiaras, and a whole slew of party dresses that say "starry night" almost as fabulously as one Vincent van Gogh.

Hopefully, Valentino and Zuhair Murad are just the tip of the iceberg — because really, nothing can quite take your breath away with a good old star-studded ball gown. They’re literally the stuff of fairytales (shout out to Allerleirauh , a slightly obscure Brothers Grimm tale about a princess with a magical dress “as dazzling as the stars"). Luckily for us, space-themed fashion has been all over the red carpets this year. Let's take a look at some of the most out-of-this-world out-of-this-world ensembles!

One of the best party frocks that ever partied (and she is killing it in the hair department).

The Duchess of Cambridge got in on the whole space-themed trend — and if she's not an arbiter of upcoming trends, I don't know who is.

4. Kate Mara in Valentino

Jupiters, Saturns, shooting stars, nebulas, pockets: This little frock’s got the works.

5. Angelababy in Zuhair Murad

Angelababy, whom you might recognize from recent headlines regarding her off-the-chain wedding (and accompanying handmade Christian Dior), wore this absolutely glorious Zuhair Murad ball gown to the Bazaar Star Charity Night in Beijing.

6. Saoirse Ronan in Valentino
