'Supergirl's Kara Is Extremely Relatable

by Kelly Schremph

Your brain doesn't need to work faster than a speeding bullet to realize that CBS' new superheroes series Supergirl packs a pretty impressive punch. It's not just that the show pays homage to a female heroine in a new and exciting way (without feeling the need to sexualize her attire like many portrayals of the past), but it's also introducing a refreshing take on the characters themselves. Just look at the show's leading lady, for example. Even when she's not donning a red cape and the House of El family crest, Supergirl 's Kara Danvers, played by Melissa Benoist, proves to be just as captivating as her superhero alter ego. In fact, not only is just extremely likable, I think many real-life women would find her character to be super relatable when it comes to the highs and lows of everyday life.

Yes, while it's true that most of us don't know what it's like to fly through the air with the greatest of ease or shoot heat lasers from our eyes, that doesn't mean we aren't able to put ourselves in Kara's shoes from time to time and completely understand what she's going through on this little planet of ours. She may be an alien on paper, but in actuality, she's proven to be just as human as the rest of mere mortals. For starters…

1. She Embraces Her Uniqueness

Every woman wants to dare to be different and Kara is the epitome of that idea. Don't hide your individuality. Own it.

2. Cat Videos Are Her Real Kryptonite

We've all been there.

3. She Stands Up For Feminism

Preach, girl. PREACH!

4. She Understands The Struggle Of Sexism

Apparently, this is a problem that exists on all planets.

5. She, At Times, Can't Stand Her Boss

The work struggle is real, my friends.

6. She Refuses To Be Judged On Physical Appearances Alone

Because she, like the rest of us, knows that the over-sexualization of women is a stereotype that needs to be stopped.

7. She Knows That Eating Food & Watching TV Should Always Go Hand-In-Hand

Netflix and Chill? More like Netflix and Chili.

8. She Has Big Career Aspirations

And is constantly striving to reach her full potential. (Which exists far beyond the realm of getting coffee.)

9. She Isn't Immune To First Date Nerves

Stopping a bullet with your bare hand may be easy, but tackling your first date wardrobe can sometimes feel like the most perilous task of all.

10. She's Occasionally Super Awkward

But in the most adorable way possible.

11. She's Passionate About What She Wants

And she isn't afraid to go out there and get it. Because, despite popular belief, you don't need a red cape and superhero powers to be a fierce and formidable woman.
