Winter is the perfect time to indulge in fun new fashions, so if you've been eyeing a faux fur coat, I say go for it! Cleaning it might seem daunting, but I'm here to break down exactly how to clean fake fur so you never have to worry about wrecking your jacket. With a little DIY love, it'll stay clean, fluffy, and soft all winter long.

I don't personally own a faux fur coat, but my vegan master friend, Maria, owns several from Stella McCartney and I've never seen them looking anything less than perfect. She spilled her secrets on which website tutorials she uses to DIY care for her faux fur coats, and also gave me a list of her favorite how-to vids. After sifting through the sites and video tutorials, I pulled the top three most common Maria-approved methods to share with you all! Each tutorial is straightforward and incredibly easy to follow. These methods are also fine to use on any faux fur item beyond just jackets. Whether you've got a pair of cute faux fur mittens, a faux fur-laced sweater or hoodie, or something else entirely, these cleaning strategies below will work perfectly!

1. Blow Dryer Magic

2. Washing Machine

Yes, it's totally possible to use a washing machine on faux fur. WikiHow put together a really a solid tutorial for pulling it off! You start by turning your garment inside out, setting the washer to delicate and cold, and cleaning with a gentle detergent and fabric softener. Towel dry, shake the the item to fluff the fur, turn it right-side-out, and hang to dry.

3. Baby Wipes

For a quick, gentle clean to just freshen your garment up a bit, The Hairpin advised simply brushing over you fake fur garment with baby wipes (P.S. This is Maria's favorite strategy in a pinch!)
