'Star Wars' Rey Is A Total Badass

Feminist Star Wars fans rejoice! We finally have a female character that we can all rally around. No more sexy slave costumes or sexist weaponry choices — the new trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens proves that the character Rey is a total badass, and one that everyone should celebrate. In the 30-second television trailer released on Sunday, Rey takes center stage, and I, for one, couldn't be happier that she's highlighted so prominently.

This newest Star Wars clip joins the several teasers and trailers already released that have begun to give the public insights and clues about this desert scavenger. Rey is seen in these clips handling a staff weapon, and while she still isn't given a lightsaber like her male counterpart Finn, this is huge improvements over the little laser-blaster wielded by Padme. It would seem that things are finally changing for women in a galaxy far far away.

In addition to her weapon of choice, Rey has got some major skills in hand-to-hand combat. Daisy Ridley, who portrays the character, did extensive training in the bojutsu fighting style, and while I do not know what that is, exactly, but it sounds terrifying. If the trailers are any indication, the training has paid off, because Rey is clearly a chick that is not to be messed with.
